Shifter Without Butchering Console?

I was wondering if any of you guys have put in one of the B&M shifters without too much trouble. I was looking at the Pro-Ratchet shifter, but something tells me it might not be the easiest fit. Experiences? I am putting a TH350 in with a manual valve body and I need to find a shifter that works well with my needs and also doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. If you guys have pictures of your setups, feel free to post. I'm curious to see what all has worked for you.

And FWIW: My car is originally a T-5 car, so I'm converting it. Not sure how much (if any) of a difference it will make, but I'm sure I'll figure it out when I start digging around.

Re: Shifter Without Butchering Console?

I installed a B&M Megashifter in my '91 Camaro.

Cutting the console was not that difficult and it looks fantastic once installed. I do have some issues with it that makes me unhappy with the shifter though...

I have a 700R4 transmission, so you may not have the same issues with the TH350 since you only have a 3 speed. The B&M Mega shifter is able to work with a 3 or 4 speed, there is a locking pin that must be removed to work with a 4 speed, which I removed for my 700R4. However, I have NEVER been able to get it adjusted properly. I have followed the instructions to the letter on adjusting, and it just doesn't work right. It will either go into Park and now Low(1st) gear, or it will go into Low and then not Park... Right now I have it adjusted where both Park and Low are working, but in order to get the shifter into Low, you have to SLAM it down with two hands or it wont engage. And getting it out of Park also takes two hands... Some people think I did not route the cable properly, but it is... If I unhook the cable at the shifter linkage it operates smoothly all the way though, just not when its hooked up.

But like I said you might now have this issue with a 3 speed, since my shifter works great from park to 2nd gear (which would be your low gear without the lockout pin removed)...

Do you have any pictures of it installed? I've only seen maybe one. I'm curious to see what it looks like.

Be sure and get us some pictures of your's once its installed

Just be sure you route the cable properly. Read the instructions closely.. The cable it a few feet longer than it needs to be, so the instructions have you route it in a loop above the transmission and then down to the linkage. I think that was the hardest part of the whole install.

Did it come with the baseplate, or do I need to go dig in a salvage yard for one? I'll post pictures when it's in (I actually am doing a complete tear-down right now with a BUNCH of changes, so this is actually one of the minor changes..)

It comes with the base plate. Its actually metal too, not cheap plastic. The base plate mounts on top of the existing console after you cut the hole that is described in the instructions.

Re: Shifter Without Butchering Console?

Oh by the way... If you don't want to butcher your stock console when you install the B&M Megashifter, you should check out these aftermarket console panels specifically for the Megashifter. They come with a bunch of built-in toggle switches if you have any use for them.
