Trunk Latch Help.

I have a 91 Camaro RS. When I first got it I could open and close the Hatchback no problem. One day I opened the trunk and tried to close it. The part that grabs the latch, to make the trunk stay closed, gets pushed down along with the latch instead of grabbing it. Is there a way to adjust that part to make it stay still or am I going to have to get new parts.

Re: Trunk Latch Help.

Sounds as if the clear plastic motor housing is broken. I only sell new ones that I reinforce with aluminum and epoxy. As a temporary bandaid fix I've seen baling wire, wood screws, chewing gum, duct tape, etc. used to hold the housing to the frame.

Re: Trunk Latch Help.

Its not a non-electric trunk. It has a an electric pull down. You just barely click the hatch in place and the motor pulls it down. It was probably broke when you bought it and maybe had something placed (like mentioned above) to keep the latch from sliding in the rails.

Re: Trunk Latch Help.

All Camaros and Firebirds came with a motorized pull-down unit from 1986-92. The exception being 1992 Convertibles which had their power pull-down unit swapped for a slam latch by ASC during the conversion. Regardless if it has the motor there now it had one stock from the factory. If it doesn't have a motor then someone jerry-rigged it. Depending on how they did it you may still need to replace the plastic part I mentioned.

Re: Trunk Latch Help.

To answer I'll need to know what style of pull-down unit you have. The 1986-early 91 (with a metal frame where it attaches to the car body) or the late 91-92 (with a tan colored molded plastic frame where it attaches to the car body).

You can buy rebuilt ones on ebay, or parts for the one you have. They go real fast at the junk yard. Good luck!

https://www.thirdgen.org/tech/hatchpulldown.pdf

I've attached a link to the Tech Article here on TGO that I wrote on repairing your hatch pull-down unit. If just the clear plastic motor housing broke then you can replace just that. Or you can get a new-style replacement motor. I sell both a reinforced motor housing and a reinforced new-style motor. Look on my web site under Hatch repair items.

Re: Trunk Latch Help.

I also have a question about a parking brake. I know my camaro don't have a parking brake like newer cars it only has a ebrake but I jus a new touch screen cd player deck for my car and in order for me to watch DVD on it I need to hook up the p brake wire up from the cd deck to my car but like I said it don't have one. Would it be possible to get a p brake switch from a newer car and hook it up in my car so that it always tells my cd play that my car is in park?

Just out of curiousity, Is that just for a safety option so people don't go cruising down the road and watching movies at the same time or does it display on the screen that it is in park. I would install it myself on a +12v wire switchable when key is on and ignore what the book says..

Re: Trunk Latch Help.

There is a ground wire that is switched on by pulling on the parking brake. The wire is under the center console and is tan/white. Most likely the audio/video system is looking for a switched ground and that is the one you'll use. Just tap into that wire.
