I'm looking to replace my outer door handles on my 90GTA. The manual says to remove a spring. What spring are they talking about? All I see is the rod that connects to the door handle and 2 bolts securing the handle to the door. Where is the spring???

The only spring I know of is the anti-rattle spring, which is part of the handle. When you remove the handle, you can see it on the under side, it's the piece that often breaks and causes the handle to rattle.

 

Maybe they mean the metal clip for the door lock itself. I just unfasten the metal rod, undo the two securing nuts and out it comes. A flex head racheting wrench makes this a snap.

 

I think Norcal is right. The clip, part #5, is spring-like as its shape applies pressure. I experienced a heck of time in removing it.

I believe that gorgeous finger belongs to me. I'm very photogenic .

thanks for the replies. i didn't remove the spring b/c it made no sense to do so. the install went fine and the new handles work perfectly. one thing i did notice is that the plastic wire-rod insert piece was plugged in the wrong way. I had to pull it out and plug it in on the other side. I guess that's what I get for using a firebird manual while working on a GTA
