Iroc seats vs. 3rd gen Firebird seats

Hello everyone. I've made a post about 4th gen seats before, so sorry for more seat posts, but I have another question. I was in the local junk yard the other day and I say a third gen Firebird with (I believe) a 3.1L engine. I was in looking for seats, so I took a look and saw what looked like better, more supportive ones. I sat in the drivers seat and it felt quite a bit better than the seats in my iroc. The seats in my car are like flat boards (in really good shape though), while these were contoured more. Unfortunately, they were pretty beat.

So, were the seats used in the firbirds generally better seats than those used in the camaros? I would like a set uf 4th gen LS1 car seats, but just in case I don't end up being able to either find any or come up with the cash, maybe these would get the job done? I have a bad back, so one unfortunate side of my car is that it's really uncomfortable for my lower back.

The seats I saw were kind of like this, I believe:

Mine are similar to this:

Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Sure feels like they are. I have sat in some bird seats from yard birds and they are more comfortable than my seats in my 92 RS.

Of course, everything about a Firebrid is better

But id look for some fancy import seats with adjustable lumbar support.

Yota's had that

Do you have power seats? When I added power seats to my car my lower back pains went aways. When I recovered my leather seats I added additional lumbar support and now my 3rd gen seats are comfortable. The power wire was already installed and hidden under the carpet. All I had to do is add the seat and plug it in and viola. I had those seats that you have and there is a very big difference.

Sure, suuure lol. Well, Pontiac seemed to spend more time on the interior. Hmm, I'll take a look next time I'm at the yard.

These seats aren't power. So, the wire is right there ready to use? That would be perfect. I've been keeping my eye out for seats and if I see some power seats I'll look into them. It would be cool if, in the future, I could do the rear seats as well, just so everything matches. The last 4th gen ls1 seats I saw on craigslist were $650 for just the fronts. I'd much rather put that into new shocks/struts.

I think some of my problem (as well as the lack of lumbar) is because the bottom portion of the seat is so flat and short. That makes it really uncomfortable on your legs, which hurts your back.

One person I know told me I should go onto summit and order some procar seats, but racing seats don't look to be all that plush. The only plush seats on there that would really work with the car are over $800 for the set, which I don't care to do.

On most cars the wiring is right there under the carpet. There is even a little slit cut in the carpet to bring the wire through. If not it is easy to hook up as it's only a hot wire to the fuse box and a ground. As far as comfort when I recovered my seats I added additional foam from an extra thirdgen seat I had. Made all of the difference in the world. That eliminated the "flat" bun seat problem and it was cheap as in free upgrade. But the biggest improvement was just going to power. You can make minor adjustments with the seat that you can feel in your lower back right away. I will never have a thirdgen without power seats. Eventually I plan to fab my passenger seats for the same power comfort.

Re: Iroc seats vs. 3rd gen Firebird seats

Not sure exactly what your budget is... but 4th gen cloth seats are both plentiful and fairly cheap. Leather ups the price a good bit.

For example, I got a set of 4th gen cloth seats from a firebird for $50 in perfect condition. Check your local craigslist, ebay, penny pincher magazines etc etc. The good deals are out there!

You are going to have a tough time finding nice thirdgen seats in a yard. They're just getting too old. Even clean seats can have broken down foam and all.

The 4th gen seats are WELL worth it. Just tighter and more comfy..whether you go with camaro or firebird seats.

Re: Iroc seats vs. 3rd gen Firebird seats

Well A couple of things here

#1. I just bought some seats out of a 2000 trans am (power, lumbar and side supports) I don't have them installed yet but just from sitting in them out of the car they feel way more supportive than the seats in my 92 RS. The seats that I currently have feel like sitting on a piece of plywood with a sponge on top, well the T/A seats are more contoured and supportive.

#2. Not sure what your budget is but if your looking for a deal my advice is to just keep looking a deal will pop up eventually. I got my seats off of ebay for $50 plus shipping came to a grand total of $125, unfortunately they were advertised as needing to be recovered and "the lumbar did nothing when I hit the button" once I got them I found there was no air bag motor or switches for the passenger seat (it pissed me off because he made it sound like he had no idea why they didn't work but in another auction he was selling the harness that went to the missing air bag motor so he knew there was parts missing but didn't say that, but the price was cheap). I found out a new motor was $300. In another stroke of luck I again checked ebay and found a guy selling the passenger seat bottom which included the air bag motor and the switches for $50 with shipping it came to $75. Also as far as recovering the seats goes check this out http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/appear...pics-come.html basically this guy made new seat covers for $175 without embroidery. I haven't heard of anyone else doing this but it looks simple enough and this winter I am going to first try to cover the seat bottom I got and if that turns out good I'm gonna try all the seats. In the end I figure I'll have about $450 to $500 into the seats but they will basically be like new and still cheaper than the ones I see on ebay that are in good condition. If you got any other questions let me know I have done quite a bit of research on these.

Good luck and just remember a deal will pop up eventually.

The seats you bought aren't the ones that are in your car now are they? If so I'm wondering if you recovered them.

Also I love your car I'm a camaro person but what you've done to your car is exactly what I want to do to mine. It looks awesome clean and finished, great job on your car.

Re: Iroc seats vs. 3rd gen Firebird seats

I switch the seats back and forth. I run the leather seats mostly. But if Im going down to the shore or on a long trip, Ill usually throw the cloth seats in. 1) they are better when its hot and you have the tops out. 2) they were cheap and I dont care if they get some road drinks or whatever on them. And 3) when I go to the beach, I usually drive to an access point. So we hop back in with sun lotion on and all salty and crap. Cloth is much more pleasant to sit on for that occasion haha.

But most of the time the charcoal leather seats are in the car.

Thanks for the compliments!

J.

GTA ultima seats are very comfortable. I love that you can adjust the bolsters of the seats so its like a racing bucket, or loosen them up for everyday driving. I want to recover mine in cloth though, because leather doesn't feel very nice in the desert..

Re: Iroc seats vs. 3rd gen Firebird seats

I realize this thread is a month old, but I have an excellent condition Procar Elite seat (not "lumbar," however) with a $70 thirdgen adapter already on it. the thing is practically brand new (zero blemishes) and I can't find a buyer because i don't have a pair of seats, only one. IF you decide to go with the Procar Elite black velour (cloth), I've got the driver's side, if you're interested. At this point, I'd take $100 plus shipping (although local pickup is best). it retails (with the adapter) for about $400, not including shipping.
