5th Gen Interior Swap ?
I love the new interior of the new 2010 Camaro. Just wondering if anyone has attempted or researched the idea of a complete interior swap (dash. steering wheel, console< etc).
It would look bad a$$ in my recently restored 91Z.

I'm gonna have to look for that.... sounds like somethin I may be interested in.... but it's gonna be hard finding 5th gen interior for a decent price....

They won't hit the junk yard, the insurance company will have it in its private yard and will auction it off. Anyone can call up ins places and get auction list.

If I remember correctly someone had the measurements and they are like 4 inches different but I don't remember if the 5th gen dash is bigger or smaller. So it would not be a very good fit you would either have to section it or stretch it somehow either way I don't think it would turn out to great I think it would be much easier to create a custom dash that looks like the 5th gen dash. The biggest problem is the 5th gen is not an F-body so I don't believe they share any components with the 3rd or 4th gen other than an lsx motor but I don't believe there is any parts that will directly bolt on a 3rd gen from a 5th gen (other than maybe the rearend and possibly a few other parts but nothing like 3rd and 4th gen compatibility).

I think it'll be a good number of years before you see 5th gens in the u-pull-it junkyards. Generally the u-pull-it yards pay less for the cars they bring in, so late models and high end cars end up in the yards that pay more and demand higher prices for their parts.

the camaro and g8 share the same DNA, very different than any previous f-body. gotta say i love the way the floors are setup on these cars - designed for true duals from the factory!

Regarding the 5th gen not being an f-body... an "f-body" isn't so easy to define. There are little to no shared components between the 2nd and 3rd gen cars, They only share the Camaro and Firebird names and "f-body" designation. It's somewhat unique that the 4th gen changed very little from the 3rd gen in terms of the unibody structure. The only major structural change was the front subframe... everything from the firewall back is nearly identical. Also, the 5th gen has a completely different rear axle than any previous generations because it's an indepentant rear suspension. It wouldn't swap into any previous generation without a great deal of fabrication.
I think it'll be a good number of years before you see 5th gens in the u-pull-it junkyards. Generally the u-pull-it yards pay less for the cars they bring in, so late models and high end cars end up in the yards that pay more and demand higher prices for their parts.

I know we're getting off topic but I agree with everything you said except that 3rd and 4th gens being similar is unique. I think that happens more than the automakers would like us to realize. The other one I can think of is the 2nd and 3rd gen vettes I think I heard at 1 time that the frame was the exact same too., and I think the 1st and 2nd gen f-bodys were pretty similar too (I'm sure a lot of the parts would interchange but since they are both WAY out of my price range I haven't really looked into it). Also I had forgot about the 5th gen having independent rear suspension so you are completely right there. I also agree with 1adan that the 5th gen would be closer to the G8 and probably the GTO too more so than anything that previously had a Camaro nameplate (since they are all based on Holdens).

When the 5th gen Camaro concept was built, there weren't immediate plans for production. When they decided to build it, they wanted to save money. To do so, they took an existing platform called Zeta that was used for large sedans by Holden in Australia. They modified the existing Zeta platform to work for the 5th gen Camaro. So technically the 5th gen isn't an f-body, it's a version of Zeta (just like the G8 is).
But in the end, how much does the platform name really matter? A 2nd gen and 3rd gen "f-body" have the same name but share no structure in common... so the 5th gen Camaro is no more different from the 4th gen than the 3rd gen is from the 2nd gen.

I work for GM service, and the 2010 is referenced as an F platform in all service information. obviously its not the same as earlier generations, but its still called an F platform.

Only because people wanted their "F-body". On paper its an F car, but in reality its a Z car. Built on pretty much the same line as the G8 was.

Regardless... big deal. the first and second gens were classified as F cars too and they have nothing in common with later models. All I'm saying is that the new camaro is still called an F car even though its completley different than any of the previous versions.

exactly. it's all semantics. "F-car" or "F-body" don't have scientific definitions. It's just a manufacturing designation that has become popular with enthusiasts... hence the desire to continue the tradition of calling Camaro "f-body". Personally, I know i'm pretty attached to that terminology and will refer to all generations as one purely out of habit.

Also the current Malibu is already using the Z carline designation, so i'm sure GM just decided since nothing else is useing F why not keep it F

That is the same platform as the GM Australian built Commodores.
The hotter versions of the Commodores (SS, GTS etc) run LS-series engines and are great handling cars.
