Well, my old headliner was in terrible condition so I went ahead and ordered a new one, in which they claim the front three clips are unnecessary.

I have it installed now, and the front center of it is sagging right above the rear view.

Anybody else have this problem? Suggestions?

 

Same problem on both of the ABS headliners I have installed. Very frustrating!

 

Maybe you can put something between the roof and the headliner ? Like foam.

 

common problem double sided tape, or velcro, happens cuz the two front clips are missing.

 

The ABS headliner was the worst purchase I have ever made for my car. Downright horrible piece.

Mine sagged just like you describe. My solution was a couple of screws (large head black GM screws like the ones holding the rear deck interior plastic to the underside of the hatch) right through the headliner into the bottom of the T-bar about 6 to 12 inches aft of the mirror itself. Carefully drill pilot holes with a small drill bit through the headliner (careful not to let the fabric spin up in the bit) and into the metal that supports the roof.

Nobody including me ever looks up at it, and even if somebody does, you don't notice the screws. Even if you do notice the screws they could easily pass as stock to somebody who doesn't know thirdgens.

 

I'd explore the use of velcro or the factory-style clips before driving screws into your roof. Enough people have found suitable solutions without resorting to that level.

Velcro has been on my mind for it, but I just wanted to check to make sure I hadn't done something wrong first.

 

I just installed an ABS plastic headliner and used velcro to hold the front of the headliner in place--worked great!

BUT what are you guys doing with the actual T-bar area? My passenger side looks great but on the drivers side the headliner sticks out a good 1.5 inches in a couple areas. I cant velcro that area either! What have you guys done to get it back in shape? Heat? I just dont want to burn the fabric.

 

What is the T-bar area? Is that just under the seatbelt retractor? Because I'm having the same issue on the driver side as well! Maybe just an inch instead of an inch and a half though.

 

I know old thread... I am getting a Hawks ABS headliner for hardtop so hopefully fitment should be good as from what I am seeing it is t top ones which have some fitment issues.

Has anyone managed to use the clips in the front to avoid sagging? Perhaps glueing new headliner clips to the ABS? Or fiberglassing the clip retainers?

 

A 2"x2" square of Velcro installed where each clip formerly was takes care of the issue. Be sure to clean both the back of the liner panel and the window frame where the clips were with alcohol before putting on the Velco. Has worked on both our Firebird and Camaro. The Firebird's liner has been in for four years now and no problems. Two years on the Camaro. Firebird's a T-top and the Camaro is a hardtop.

 

Thanks. So the thickness is still valid to make contact with the factory clip locations. Great will try Velcro however will also attempt glueing the oem clips

I have a hardtop ABS headliner and have the sagging problems described here. I hope you have better luck than myself, but for me the velcro solution did not work. It stuck good to everything until the first time I left the car parked outside in the heat/sun at which point the adhesive let go. Others seem to have used it with success though so go for it before attempting more extreme measures.


I plan to pull my headliner back out at some point and epoxy a small diameter metal rod across the front. At least that's my thinking right now. There may be other issues with that idea I haven't thought of.

 

Home Depot sells packs of the stronger Velcro for outdoor use I think the strips hold 20 lbs works great.
