Instrument Cluster Swap Help

Evening fellows, haven't been on in a while, computer crashed and burned, lost everything, I mean EVERYTHING. This brings me to my question. A while back some info from some of you on swapping gauge cluster in my 84 sport coupe from idiot light cluster to cluster with full gauges and got many great responses. I wasn't quiet ready to do it then so I saved all your replies to a file for later. Problem is when my computer died so did all that info so I would like to ask a few questions.......again. I am told I can use a cluster out of 85 and later camaros but that back lighting or something(can't remember what) would not be exactly right, also that since my car has v6 that it would need to come from a donor car that had a v6. Does this mean that for everything to work as if it came from the factory that only a cluster from an 82-84 out of v6 car will work?, or does it even have to come from a v6 car? Also, are there other things I would need to change ( temp and oil pressure etc. sending units, possibly distributer to make tach work) and since the fuel gauge is in a different place will it still work? Any answers to these questions would help greatly. I don't want to have to jury rig anything because this is a very nice car.
Thanks,

I think you're good with a cluster up to 86, but the 87 cluster moved the warning lights all over the place. It'd need a V6 tach, and a V6 oil pressure gauge.

All you need to do is swap the cluster, and change the oil pressure and temperature idiot light switches for gauge senders.

What's the difference in the v6 and v8 tachs? Thanks for the info.

Re: Instrument Cluster Swap Help

The tach is connected to the ignition primary circuit and measures the rate of ignition pulses. A V6 has 3 firings per rotation of the engine, a V8 has 4. A V6 tach on a V8 engine will read high.

Re: Instrument Cluster Swap Help

Mine has a v6, so I assume in that case a v8 panel would read low, ok, thanks for the info.
