What Product to Dye Carpet?

Well, the front section of the carpet in my car was SHOT so I just completely replaced that. But last night I removed the back section and upon inspection, appeared to be in good shape. I sprayed it with tuff stuff foam cleaner, removed the jute padding from the back and thoroughly rinsed it with a garden hose.

Now, here is the tricky part. The carpet cleaned up VERY well for a 25 year old piece. There are no rips or tears so It's worth keeping right? Well, the factory interior was beechwood and I'm doing an all black conversion. So if this carpet is gonna stay It's gotta change It's appearance. I attempted to mix some rit dye in a spray bottle and SATURATED an area of the carpet about the size of a grapefruit to test. I let this spot sit for 10 minutes then rinsed it with the garden hose and it failed to make even a dent as if I had never put the dye on in the first place. Also smearing it around with my finger the dye remained separated from the fibers. Think oil in water. Is this carpet polyester?

I then tried a tiny bit of VHT Vinyl dye I had left to test which worked good, but left the carpet with that nappy brittle feel, which I don't care for all that much.

Does anyone here have a recommendation for good product that will work and stay?

Ok heres the problem. you dident let the rit dye dry. it takes overnight or longer for that stuff to work. get a spray bottle dilute it then spray it on the carpet and use a soft brush to work it into the knap. If this dosent work for you there are companys that make special dye for doing exactly what your talking about
