I'm about to swap my ailing 700R4 for a T-5 in my 84 Camaro. I've been told that the T-5 (91 Firebird vintage) has an electronic speedometer sending unit, but my 84 has a mechanical speedometer. How do I convert this? I can't use the speedo out of the Firebird as the instrument cluster is different. What's my best option going forward?

 

Remove the VSS from the tail shaft of the 91. Purchase the correct speedo gear housing and drive and/or driven gears for a T-5 and swap in. Screw the cable in place.

It's a piece of cake. Since that T5 was used in applications with mechanical speedos as well as with electric, the mechanical & electric senders are interchangable in the tailshaft. You just need to get one from a car with a mechanical speedo and install it in your T5.
