Turn signal stalk issue

I have an '89 Trans Am and it always felt like the turn signal stalk was a little lower than it should be. It has been getting increasingly difficult to put on the left turn signal and it is now to the point I can't get it to click down to the left turn position. Right works fine. Any thoughts on what/how to check this out? I have never worked on a steering column before. I do have the steering wheel mounted audio controls if that makes a difference.

Thanks
