Could temperature gauge literally be stuck?

Hey,

I daily drive my IROC and the temperature gauge has ALWAYS worked perfectly. However, 2 days ago the needle went ALL the way up to the top, and looks almost like it's stuck up there. It never moves (when the car starts, or engine shuts off).

Has this happened to anyone? Could the gauge possibly be stuck? Do I just pop off the gauge cluster and unstuck it?

Thanks

Have you checked the sender wire? Its green, driver side head, between #1 & #3 spark plug. If its not getting a signal (come loose, come off, or break in the wire) then the guage will peg out.

Yes, tap the dashboard and see if it comes unstuck. Thats what I used to do on one of my cars. If it works and does it again simply remove the front cover and push the end of the needle down some(towards the gauge face) to keep it away from the gauge panel when it sweeps upward. If that doesn't work you may have a short like stated above.

Thanks !

I'll try it out sometime soon and let you know. Unfortunately it's like -20 right now so I don't want to freeze my *** off in the garage

Re: Could temperature gauge literally be stuck?

I had this issue with my 87 IROC. It would stick the needle during startup for some reason; I tried replacing the sender and pushing the needle back to no avail. Ended up trimming the tip of the gauge needle off and it works to this day for its current owner.

Re: Could temperature gauge literally be stuck?

My t/a was like that when I bought it, ended up being a bad gauge. If you move the needle, and it goes without any resistance, and will keep spinning if you were to flick it (Don't just flick it, don't want to break it if it does work) than its probably a bad gauge.

Re: Could temperature gauge literally be stuck?

I agree that's likely the problem; pretty simple circuit.

Perfect find. My temp gauge did this today for the first time. Have to check all things mentioned before I begin to replace things.
