New steering wheel.

Hello I was looking to get a new steering wheel for my thirdgen camaro. It's a 92 and the steering wheel I been looking into does not have a air bag. I was wondering how difficult it is to remove the steering wheel with an air bag and install one with out an air bag.

Re: New steering wheel.

If it is for a street car, I'd check the law first. Removing a Federal Safety item is probably illegal.

Otherwise, it shouldn't be much more difficult than removing a non-bag steering wheel, except that you need to disconnect the battery hours before to make sure that the airbag launch box has no residual charge left & won't launch your wrench up through your skull when the bag goes off as your trying to unbolt it.

Ok thank you. And my other question is how do I know If I need to buy a installation kit or not and the extension kit. I was looking into a 10 inch diameter steering wheel

Re: New steering wheel.

Get a grant. Also you will need an installation kit. Simple install you don't need any special tools just a socket set, although some people like to use a steering wheel puller.

Make sure you disconnect the batt whenever doing anything that has to do with something even remotely electrical.

10" is small. Not really practical on the street. I have a grant its 13" I wouldn't go any smaller than 12", Unless it was for the track only.

Mine is 14.25", but I still agree....10" is way too small. Only seen those as a chain steering wheel on a Lowrider.

14.25 ID? should be just about 15" OD. I know my 85 Iroc-z wheel was 15" its sitting next to me.

Re: New steering wheel.

Getting rid of airbag could also present a fraud case to your insurance copany if your getting a premium discount for having an airbag - so natify them as well and pay the difference in premiums. Otherwise, if in an accident, they may not pay.

If you want to retain the airbag, the 4th gen wheels are a direct swap - and their airbags don't come loose on the edges over time like the 3rd gen ones do.

Nope. I just double checked. 14 3/8" outside to outside, stock non-airbag steering wheel. Had to pull off my slip-on cover to get an accurate measurement.
