retro dash mod

ok something i dont think has been done yet that i am experimenting with doing is adapting a second gen trans am ac dash panel into my third gen dash
the steering is in about the perfect place and the passengers side is exactly where the third gen cluster set ended the drivers side will take some work to make look right but the rest is pretty straight forward set up with some mettle trim panels and a little work , when doing this set up it will be 100% bolt in and able to be changed back to stock if i ever wanted to

you can see where the drivers side will be a bit of a problem

i also plan to set this to to use my third-gen speed and tach and put aftermarket gauges in the other 2 gauge holes and the ac vent holes
will add more pics and up dates as i make progress on this

Re: retro dash mod

I think this has been done before, I remember talking to someone else about this exact topic about a year ago, maybe less. Do some searching, maybe you will dig up a name that could be useful.

Re: retro dash mod

the closest i could find in a search was one guy that wanted to put the whole second gen dash in his car and an other guy what wanted a kit to put the engine turned mettal around his stock cluster but not quite like this , but if someone has done this before i would appreciate any advice on how they did it

Re: retro dash mod

Ah you are correct. He was wanting to swap the entire dash. If you search in that thread, you should see my name come up. I was going to steal the idea and do the same, because I have an 81 parts camaro. I never did get around to doing it, but I'm sure it couldn't be all that difficult, with the right tools.

Re: retro dash mod

i am sure a total dash swap could be done if you wanted to , the reason i am trying to do this the way i am is i just want the engine turned panel as it's the only part of the second gen dash i really like ,plus i just got an brand new pad for it, and it makes it easy for me to install my aftermarket oil, volts, fuel and temp gauges as none of the stock ones work, but still use my stock speed and tach for more of a factory look

Re: retro dash mod

made some progress today tach and speedometer are now mounted to the second gen dash penal and the panel is mounted in from the top , i made a metal strip around the bottom and around the passengers side to mount the bottom and side still not finished but i put it back in the car to check fit and see what it will look like

it ended up being a bit off by the steering column but i will see what i can do about that

Re: retro dash mod

Lookin' pretty good to me! Now you need to get some more gauges to fill in those other holes.
