'88 Trans Am seatbelt replace/upgrade
'88 Trans Am seatbelt replace/upgrade
Guys! I have an '88 Trans Am GTA. It has the lap belts in the rear. I would like to fit 3 point (with shoulder) belts to the rear. Can I just get '89 and later belts and bolt them in? Are there any differences?
I also just started reading about problems with the front seatbelts which are common on this car. I thought it was just mine. The front belts are showing that crumbling on the red button and they also started so they sometimes don't retract or lock properly.
I read the 4th gen is much the same car with a lot of these issues fixed.
If I buy a set of new seatbelts for the 4th gen car will they fit up OK In my '88?
Are there any other good options? I don't want to buy 2nd hand belts or something of unknown quality.
I'm just wanting the car to be safe if the worst should happen.
I am in the UK so I can't even think about the recalls as my car is an "unapproved import"

Re: '88 Trans Am seatbelt replace/upgrade
Front 4Th gen seats belts are a direct fit on all 82-92, but they don't have the retractor on the sill plate.
If you wan't 89-up seat belts in your 88, you need to weld a bracket on the rear wheel wells.
My Trans Am is from the UK and had the recall modifications on the seat belts. But it was first registered in 1990 according to the V5C.

Thanks for the reply. My front seat belts do not retract properly and the material is damaged on the passenger one. Also the red buttons are going chalky so I am sure there recall was not done and even if it was the belts are old and past their best.
I am more concerned to get 3 point belts in the rear than to put later type ones in the front as I have a 4 year old daughter I want to carry safely in the car. I thought if I could get 4 matching belts it would be best for appearance.

Hi - not trying to hijack this thread, but - 4th gen front seatbelts ARE a direct replacement in a 3rd gen? For t-top car? I didn't know that. I REALLY need new seatbelts, and it would be much easier to find stuff out of a 4th gen. I haven't really been able to find any NEW replacement seatbelts that would fit.
