T Top Headliner Restoration

Hey Guys. Just thought I'd share my little project with the TGO folks. I bought my 87 TA with no headliner or molding at all. One of the probably many previous owners ripped it all out. I got sick of looking at the bare frame, so I pulled out a decent t top molding out of a buddy's z28. the fabric was wasted, but the molding was usable. I went and got me the fabric, which actually matches pretty good to the original grey. It was my first time though, and the 4 inner corners got me as you can see. I will probably re do it again soon, but here's some pics. Not bad, for a car with no headliner or molding when I got it. I'm also going to re do my sail panels with left over scrap material. Those will be cake, compared to the headliner. I also have a bunch of sail panels with bad fabric on them, and was thinking about re doing those as well. Like, grey, red and black. Possibly posting them on here for sale or whatever. Let me know what you think for a beginner. Thanks.[IMG][/IMG]

Re: T Top Headliner Restoration

great job for your first try. these things are very tricky and the type of material you use can make or break ya. Because of all the corners and turns on the t-top cars, a stretchy material will make things a bit easier to tuck without cutting.

if you ever decide to give it another go, i'd also recommend putting down a layer of resin and fiberglass cloth. the fiberboard gets weak on these headliners and fall apart when they get wet, a bit of fiberglass can help fix this

Thanks for the comment, and I'm actually considering the idea of re doing the headliner again, because every time I look at those corners, it bugs me. I know I can do it much better to where it would look flawless all the way around. When I do decide to tear it all out again, I will definitely get some resin to strengthen the fiberboard, I don't know how much more moving around mine can handle! Thanks again.
