4thgen rear view mirror question...

I'm going run a 4thgen rear view mirror i have ran wires for the rear view mirror courtesy lights and everything is ready to go... but i have a wider size attachment on the windshield where my OEM 3rdgen mirror mounted to the glass, the 4thgen mirror mount isn't as wide and can be detached by unbolting the torques bit in the center of the mount where as the 3rdgen one is fixed and can not be unbolt... So my question is where can i get the 3rdgen style mount that i can bolt on the 4thgen post? i don't really want to take the attaching peace off the windshield id rather just swap mounts.

here is a pic to give you some insight on what im talking about
(3rdgen on your left, 4thgen on your right)

The mounts bolt to the circuit boards.Open the mirrors, remove the bolt, then just swap the mounts.Crazy glue the housings back together.

Re: 4thgen rear view mirror question...

its easy to swap the mounts on the glass, theyre just glued on. you can get the glue to put the 4th gen button on at most auto parts stores.

I've bumped mine a number of times hard enough to knock the button loose from the windshield. The rear view mirror cement available at the auto parts stores is some pretty good stuff and sets up pretty fast, but get it right the first time because it's a single use package.

Also, there's a small mark on the windshield to aid in positioning the mirror's mounting button.

Mark it with tape before taking the old one off. This is super simple.

So its easier to remove the mount from the windshield? iv never dealt with the the mounts on the glass, how hard is that to take off and what methods do you use, i would assume a source of heat and a razor blade ?

Re: 4thgen rear view mirror question...

I've never actually removed the mount on purpose. I've had it come off while trying to move an object across the front seat instead of loading it from the passenger side, and bumping the mirror with it In this case, marking the spot with tape wasn't an option, just happened to notice a very small mark on the windshield where the mount goes.

Re: 4thgen rear view mirror question...

ive never pulled one off on purpose either, i gotta reglue the one back in the camaro, i knocked it off working around the interior.

i guess you can try to attach the 3rd gen mirror and rock it back and forth ans see if it pops it off. as long as you dont really pry on it i dont see any harm being done.

Re: 4thgen rear view mirror question...

theoretically yes, but the mirror will stick that much further out from the windshield, and would look ghetto as hell. and if ive gathered anything from the OP posts, hes the last person to do something like that.

NO!!!!!

I tried that once & guess what? The Safety Film, between the layers of glass popped & gave me a real bad starburst pattern along with a bunch of bubbles.

DO NOT heat your glass with a heat gun, unless you want to totally destroy the glass.

Re: 4thgen rear view mirror question...

Here's what my small town automotive glass shop recommended (and the method worked fine for me, though my heart was in my throat the whole time):

Hit the button evenly with a propane bottle torch for a few seconds, then using pliers, gently twist. The operation took several repetitions for the button to twist free. No ill effects.
