Anyone tried using a Cobalt SS steering wheel in their 3rd gen?

I've got this crazy idea about buying a leather Cobalt SS wheel after seeing a few for sale on the Cobalt SS site that I'm on, and putting it on my Z28. I'd modify it slightly since most SS's have the steering wheel controls for the radio and cruise control, I'd make some kind of cover without any buttons, or swap out the controls for pieces from a base model....

I'm really wanting to know if this is even possible though. Will the wheel physically fit (and fit WELL) on a 3rd gen steering column? I have an '07 SS/SC and I LOVE the wheel in this car, it's amazing.

Here's a picture to show you what one looks like. I could even get someone to make a custom center emblem that says Z28 instead of the bowtie. Just imagine this without the steering wheel controls...

I like my G5 wheel also. They deff look waaaay better than the big nasty airbag in the later 3rdgens
I hade cruise control in it but didnt have the radio controls in mine until I put em in.. I'd like to upgrade to leather tho.

thats the same steering wheel thats in the malibu as well and probably a bunch of other chevys

id almost be willing to bet you could make the controls work instead of making some craptastic cover for the wheel

You should know me better than to think I'd make a "craptastic" cover for the wheel if it's going in my convertible.

I think I could find some OEM inserts to remove the controls. Honestly I wouldn't want the headache of wiring them up.

Tony, you should try it out and let me know how the wheel fits in your Formie.

I may end up screwing around with one if I can find one cheap enough for sale. Find me a piece of junk rubber one off a base model at the junk yard and I'll try it, then we can both get leather ones.

I agree with you on that. I have this same steering wheel in my '07 Cobalt SS/SC. I just don't feel like screwing with wiring to get the controls to work with my CD player. Unless someone could explain it in a way that makes it look easier than it probably is.

All we have to do is go to the junkyard with a steeringwheel puller and try the swap there... for free!!!

Re: Anyone tried using a Cobalt SS steering wheel in their 3rd gen?

actually i dont think it would be that difficult, what kind of cd player do you have?

when i put my in dash in my tacoma i only had to tap a few wires but most cars you have to buy a little box to regain the controls. let me see if i can find the link to that.

i would imagine all you would have to do is wire steering wheel to the box then the box to your cd player and that would be it. im thinking the steering wheel control wires just go straight to most car stereos.

yes they are expensive on this website but you can find them from 50.00 and up.

whatever car you get the steering wheel out of get an interface for that car and for your cd player. the only thing i can think of off hand is you might need a ground and a switched 12 volt signal for the steering wheel.

FYI the cobalt steering wheel (what you have pictured) is the SAME as a c6/c6z06 corvette wheel with a different center emblem

Yea I thought so. I wonder if the Z06 had different controls on the left side of the wheel. I don't have cruise control so the whole left side of the wheel would be useless to me if I decided to try and wire up the controls.

Re: Anyone tried using a Cobalt SS steering wheel in their 3rd gen?

They don't fit directly, but the cobalt/g6/corvette wheel has a press fit center collar. The third gen wheels have a much larger tack welded collar. One way to get around this is to lathe the third gen collar to the same diameter and press it in to the new wheel. Also the holes for the horn and clockspring don't really line up but a drill bit can take care of that. As far as the fit and finish you won't be able to notice the round column to the square wheel. The new wheel is about 1-2 inches larger in diameter and it also sticks out further. Haven't had time but if I finish this project I will post some pics.

I'd love to see finished pictures when you have a chance to get them. I've got a couple spare 3rd gen wheels laying around I can snag the collar out of if I can find the Cobalt/Corvette wheel I want.
