i just finished rewiring my cluster to clean up all the loose wires. you can see the junctions i used for the power ground and dash lights. as well as the single plug that connects it into the dash wiring.

Nice work on those gage clusters. I'm going to work on mine this summer.

For those that want the blinker arrows without cutting arrow holes, see what I'm using below. Its the New Vintage Indicator Gage except I bought it w/black bezel to match my black bezel Marshall Blue Line gages. Info at this web site - http://www.newvintageusa.com/panels.html

I wonder how difficult it would be if its even possible, to use the factory cluster connectors and pin the gauge wires into those so you can disconnect it from the dash easier? I really like this btw!

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

essentialy thats what your doing with this set up , the harness gets wired to your cluster with two connectors that will plug into the other half of the harness that you wire into your factory wiring. you cant use factory plugs because there is only one end to use, the other end is the cluster itself on factory. Also some leads should be run seperate such as vss, signal grounds etc ... these gauges are only accurate if grounded correctly , using shared lighting grounds etc wont help your cause .

So you CAN'T take the connector off the back of the cluster and use it to pin the new gauges into it?

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

to the best of my knowledge no. ( this is a connector with no wires going into it 90 92) maybe earlier year clusters ... although the autometer harness that came with my setup is a lot easier and nicer to use then trying to use factory. it would not be a simple plug and play anyways .

I also relocated fog light and rear defrost switch to center console by window switch , also ran three circuits inside console storage bin for 12v cigarette lighter ( i pod charge gps etc....) so that that i could clean up auto meter install in dash .. also frees up some room ( travis 401 seems to have installed his switches in his ) I wonder if this was an easy task ?

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

Maybe I missed it but did you buy the full kit from classicdash (like $900 or something) or did you piece together the gauges and then buy a separate harness for them?

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

yes I did buy the whole thing together, as this gave me wiring harness made for 90 92 camaros , all gauges , abs insert, sending unit for oil , temp, and all indicator leds. Also a set of instructions !!! these do help even if you are advanced with wiring knowledge. This cost me close to 1400 when done but peicing things would not have been that much cheaper and I am more than happy with the results and super clean install results. ( harness has ground rings and connectors factory installed as well , you can remove gauges easily with this setup )

So did you have to drill a new hole in a head for the water temp gauge?

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

no just replace old factory sending unit with supplied auto meter... this is typically on drivers side head on old style small block ( not sure about ls swap ) this would be a single wire not temp sensor which is two and typical above water pump

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

I wonder how much different this would be with my engine swap. My computer reads the water temp and I'm using I think a three wire coolant temp sending unit.

It's been done a while ago, but I pulled apart my car to paint it for the last 4 months. Should be back together this week

Re: 90-92 Camaro Classic Dash/Autometer intall

Hopefully u can answer my question. In my 91 Camaro rs tbi 5.0 automatic, what wire in the two dash harnesses is the pulse signal wire from the vss? In installing a new autometer cobalt speedometer. I believe its on the left harness, let me know top row or bottom, and count from left to right looking at the back of the harness, where the wires go into it, and color , thanks !
