Grant steering wheel help

I have been using this site to learn a lot of new things lately, i see a lot of great people here who really know a lot about these cars. Ive had a loose steering column since i bought the car, but today i finally got it fixed, i actually paid my mechanic to do it simply because i dont have the tools and was scared about messing it up more.......

Heres the thing, i wanted to put on my new grant challenger series wheel on, i had the adapter from grant too but my mechanic says that wheel goes on with the adapter but not straight, so basically when my tires are straight, the steering wheel shows its turned to the right....... when it should be straight and centered..... why is this happening? my stock wheel still goes on straight..... he says he can adjust the rack and pinion or something like that to make the wheel go on right but itll cost me 150.......

is it possible hes doing it wrong? i mean the factory wheel goes on straight i dont understand.... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Grant steering wheel help

It means someone either installed the steering box/column/shaft wrong or you need a serious alignment

Have you tried pulling the wheel and then the hub and re-orienting the steering wheel? That should fix it

If the steering wheel wasn't centered when the alignment was done, the car may well drive straight with a crooked steering wheel.

IIRC, my Grant has an A and B position. Take a peek. The following link shows the Grant hub (about halfway down):

hmm the part about the car driving straight with a crooked wheel, wouldnt it do that with the stock wheel too? cause my stock wheel is on correctly and straight. and i have no clue my mechanic just showed me how the wheel fits, i may go get myself a steering wheel puller and try it myself. thanks

hey what exactly do you mean by re-oreinting the hub? the hub that came with the install kit or the hub on the camaro...... is it hard to do?

Re: Grant steering wheel help

I had my alignment guy keep both tie rods the same length. It was in a suspension book, said it was the way to go.
So, without worrying about the steering wheel..... it was a little off.
My grant adapter is two parts. 3 bolts holding the top part to its main mount, along with the big nut. We just slotted the 3 holes a little to get the wheel straight.
Guess if it is off allot, you could re-do the hole's all together.

Went and looked, I re-did the holes altogther in the end.. guess I didnt like the slots. ; o
