I love the look of the PMD seats from the 1982 Trans Ams, and would like to put a set in my Firebird, but they don't come cheap and I'd have to invest in having them recovered when I find a set. Before I spring for a set I'd like to hear from those of you who have them...One concern I have is the fact that the headrest isn't adjustable, I'm 6'1", so for us taller guys, does it leave our necks unsupported, or are they tall enough. Also, just in general, how comfortable are they? I currently have a nice set of front seats out of a 1991 Cavalier, and they feel like a lazyboy recliner behind the wheel, so would It really be worth it to get a set of PMDs?
Im your height and have PMD seats in my 82 and love them. Ive never taken any really long trips in my car but for regular driving i can say they are comfortable enough for me. If you have seats you like i dont see any point in getting new seats unless you really like the way they look.
The prices that people ask for those seats is crazy for what they really are...Pontiac motor Division seats....nothing more. They are no more adjustable than stock seats. They have slightly more bolstering and a slightly different shape but they are not all that supportive. Its more a nostalgia thing for most i think with those seats (think Knight Rider).
If i were you i would look for a set of Leir Siegler Conteur seats from a Trans am. They have adjustable upper and lower bolsters as well as an adjustable leg rest and lumbar support and are VERY supportive. They are firmer than the standard seat but i like a firm seat.
Thanks for the input guys. I like the PMDs because my dads 82' had them when I was growing up, and even though he sold that car long ago, I always wanted my Firebird to be like I remember his. I may pass on them though unless I find a set local, I don't mind paying 300$ for the memory of sitting in those seats way back, but the shipping is a killer. I'm glad to hear they are supportive enough for my height. I really do enjoy the seats I have now, so I probably wouldn't actually install the PMDs till I got another DD.
Stay away from eBay and PMD seats are realistically priced. Usually under $50 for a pair at a salvage yard or swapmeet. They were also installed in '82 Sunbirds and Grand Prixs.
I'm 6FT as well and they are pretty comfy seats ,Granted mine have been recovered lol.Chance of finding PMD'S under $100 for the pair is slim to non,REMEMBER they are 30 year old seats and mainly ONLY came on the 1982 cars.I do recommend trying to get the lear sig seats for a better price,But even those seats are hard to come by these days.
Usually cost around $100 to ship PMD seats VIA greyhound bus.
I'm 6'2" and it's not really a head rest, more of an lower neck / upper back rest...
Check craigslist & junk yards... similar seats came in some 82 Gran Prix's...
I have two pair that are unfinished and even being in an unfinished state I find them more comfortable than my stock seats. And you just got to hope on the junkyard find found both mine in yards. And can't remember exact price but they were under 100 each.
As noted previously, 82 or so Grand Prix's had similar seats, once recovered, pretty much the same...
The other thing, since I sold a few of this back in the day, if "shipping" you only really need the back rest part, the bottom is pretty much the same for stock seats and bolts right up, save on shipping...
Mine originally had an electric bottom option, but I opted for the manual adjustable (later firebirds) that slid back / forth and also reclined the seat... That pretty much bolts onto any seat bottom too... (3rd gen
Unless you KNOW a great upholster, either pick a fabric or buy / use your own and use ACME. They have patterns for the seat and can send you a complete set to put on your seats (instead of shipping / back / fourth) then find a somewhat reliable local upholstery to put them on... I had a horrible experience locally, I brought factory seats to a place, their results were HORRIBLE, but since they had used the original fabric and wasted the fabric I gave them, I had to get more fabric and send it to ACME.
Here is the ACME Covers with fabric I provided (didn't want velour) PMD Seats Redone by ACME Bottom Bracket Front / Back / Recline
