What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

In my TA the headliner is all kinds of F'd up. It's annoying when I take the t-tops off and as soon as I gain speed or if I'm on the highway little debris of the headliner would shoot out and hit my eyes and anyone else with me in my car. Now for the most part it's intact and it's not a real bad eyesore but the fact that the debris keep hitting me in the eye pisses me off. Last time it happened I had to pull over and clear out my eyes that's how bad it was. It's not safe for me to drive like that because my immediate body reaction if for my hands to rub my eyes and I kinda need them on the steering wheel... I was just wondering if anyone had pictures of their car without the headliner. If it doesn't look too bad without the headliner I might just take it off until I can buy a replacement.

Like a stamped sheet metal frame held together with mediocre automatic welds covered in dull paint and probably with some surface rust.

It won't look that good, my dad's 1938 Buick without a ceiling looks 100 times better than when my camaro didnt have one for a week. I really like the abs headliners and they are only about $150

Yea I'm currently looking at websites now and seeing what they have to offer. I'm just going through the forums and reading what you guys are saying are the best places to buy from since I would say 99% of the members here know much more than I do.

The only problem is the car is my daily driver. I mean I'm willing to remove the headliner if it's not obnoxious looking after the fact.

I had mine out for almost ten years. At first it bugged me but after a bit I hardly noticed it. It was so much better though not getting crap in my eyes. I will see if I can find any pics for you.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

Someone around might have a picture of a T-top roof without the
headliner. I'm currently adding some insulation to my standard roof,
so I could snap a pic and post if you really need it.

Not to sound like a smart-a**, but it sounds like this is more of a cosmetic,
than technical issue. I mean, if it sheds debris, its a hazard & needs to be
replaced. How & when is the primary issue. Its not necessary for the daily
functioning, so take it out &clean out the residue. The car can still be
servicable (albeit fugly) while you select your replacement options.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

fbodyalltheway-

Yea any pictures you have will help thank you.

l_dis_travlr- I just need to come up with some cash to buy and replace it. I'm in the process of putting money aside. The only problem with me is I can't install it and would have to have someone do it. You didn't come off as a smart *** either don't worry. Your just telling me how it is and I'd rather that than having someone lead me on ya know? But yea if you could snap a pic for me I would appreciate it.

BloodBassist- Yea if you can do that man it would definitaly help.

mantaguy- See I would do that but I watched one a 1auto or something like that video of removing the headliner and the guy had a hard time doing it and I just don't won't to chance breaking it if I'm not gonna like it without it.

I mean the headliner isn't that BAD for the most part it kinda sags but like where the tops form its kinda hanging off and the ends is what start to break off and fly. Should I post pictures for you guys to see? Maybe you can suggest some things I could do to improve it rather than just taking it off.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

You can EASILY put it in your self. You just need to take off the a pillar covers, take out two pins where the light is and take it off, pull the plastic piece that goes across near the hatch, remove the sun visors(3 screws each), and a pin in the middle. Easiest install ever, and I am very satisfied with the abs plastic!

I took mine out, and put it on my other camaro, it was super weak but never broke. I didn't have trouble taking it out, and even dropped it off of my dad's car and it was fine.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

First when you do remove your headliner, remove the light first then all plastic interior pieces that surround it.then you can remove the headliner. My question is does it still have the fabric. or is it just the weathered foam. If the basic headline is OK I'd just remove the fabric and remove the foam. then go and get new headliner material and some spray adhesive and install it all new like.

See I don't know anything when it comes to cars. The best I can do is take a couple pics and show ya. You could tell me what I could do from there and that would also help me out a lot. I want to replace the headliner badly but other things need to be addressed first like my brakes, plugs, and tuning.

This made me laugh a bit. For a short period of time while my headliner was out I had a red light just like that in the same spot.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

Really not trying to make a douche out of myself.

There are lots of things I did 2 - 3 years ago that now I look at and think wtf was I thinking and end up changing it around.

If you want to zip-tie a neon to your roof, go for it.

Come on guys...at least the purple neon matches the Purple Haze exterior.

Personally, I'd be more worried about the absence of a rearview mirror...but then again I think the idea of the photo is to show what a car with no headliner looks like.

Two options:
  • Take it out
  • Take it out and replace it.

Its if debris from the headliner falling apart is causing issues by getting crap in your eyes it needs to come out regardless. Whether you replace it, is up to you and your wallet. But it needs to come out.

That video is exactly how you replace the fabric. its not that hard just time consoming and yes that foam does get all over evrything.

Ya I mean I also have another solution... Leave the t-tops in lol. But when you have the t-top option it's hard not to use them. Unfortunately I only work part-time at the moment and it sucks getting paid every two weeks. I said in another post that other things need to be addressed before that. But if the foam isn't that much money I can grab a can of that adhesive stuff from my uncle and start that project.

Oh yea I know my car gets pretty damn hot in the summer. Sometimes it's hot to the point where I can't even touch the steering wheel.

I just hope when I tackle this issue and repair the headliner that it fits in right because I don't want to have to mickey mouse it back on and have it installed incorrectly.

90% of thirdgens don't have headliners anymore, i found an original undamaged one in a junkyard, in a car with no glass anywhere. And it was hanging by one visor... Needless to say i grabbed it, put it in, and it really finished my car off, I cant stand to stare at bare metal.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

Alright so I finally decided to pull the headliner yesterday. I must say I had very little confidence with myself when I was doing this mission, but I got it out in "one piece". T'was a great feeling too lol I really felt accomplished when I got it out. The reason why I put quotes around one piece is because it didn't really come out in one piece lol. When I first had the car in the rear on the drivers side where the seat belt extends from the headliner board was exposed. I didn't know any better and was stupid but I just simply tucked the cloth under it and pushed it in. Unfortunatly when I took the headliner out that piece was broken and hanging off with the fabric still attached.

Now I went to joanne fabrics... and let me tell you it wasn't a pleasant trip. Kind of got two rude ladies and they gave me a hard time. I walked in with the visor to best match what the interior looks like and right off the bat before I ask any questions they told me to "Go to an automotive store or an upholstery place" when they saw what was in my hand.

Anyways I got headliner sheet, I have a wire brush to clean the board, I have the adhesive spray can, and a couple razors.

That's how it looks right now. You can see in the top left corner where it's been damaged.

That's just a close up. I need to spitball ideas with you guys. What can I use to fix the damage and still be able to spray the adhesive on the material. I would really appreciate it if you guys got back to me soon because I'm going to the insurance agency with my title and getting the ball on the road with registering her. Again I appreciate all the input you guys gave me previous to this and more input would be even better.

edit: I don't know why the pictures aren't showing but here are the direct links.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

My headliner would not hold it's shape enough to begin replacing the cloth, and the corners with the seat belt slits were barely hanging on. Turns out that the yellow backing is fiberglass. I applied a coat of polyester resin, followed by a layer of fiberglass cloth and resin to the backside. Totally saved the unit, especially the wrecked corners. Uses less than a quart of resin. Make sure that the headliner is supported to keep the proper shape while doing this.
For the fun of it, I'll apply carbon fiber instead of cloth as the visual surface.

Re: What does the roof look like after headliner removal?

Can someone help me figure out a black wire that comes out from the radio area it looks like it's factory connected to two thinner wires (don't know were those two thin wires lead to). It runs under the driver side carpet then it crawls up thru the plastic molding on the left side of the winshield and up under the headliner (t-top) but then it looks like someone clipped it so I don't know were it goes to. Map lights and center light work fine. Can someone please help. . Thanks in advance. .
