Custom Guage ideas in Trans Am

OK, I have search around, and pretty much read both threads on show me your gauges and custom interior but didn't find what I am looking for, at least I don't think. so I am turning to you guys for help.

I have never liked the 4 big ovals in the Trans Am pod, and I was browsing eBay and found a bezel with only 2 ovals, but it has a bunch of little ovals cut out.

So, when I place it over my gauges you can see parts of them. Well, easy and cheap fix, I got some fabrics and taped it to the gauges.

Now, I went and purchased small gauges to replace all the stuff that is covered up. Fuel level, Oil pressure, Battery Voltage, Water Temp, and Air PSI.

Yes, I know one is chrome, I am fixing that. I also, may purchase a Trans temp or some other gauge (suggestions?) to make it an even six.

Now, onto my other issue at hand.. Where to mount the rest?

2 or 3 on the pillar, then 2 or 3 where else? I don't want to drill into the dash pad, but I have seen 2,3,4 gauge pods that I may be able Velcro up their, but then what about running the wires? If I don't get any viable suggestion I may bite bullet and brill through the dash pad...

I'd find a way to use the empty space where the holes in the dash are. Seems kind of silly to have all those holes there that serve zero function.

I am open to that, but how would I do it? The gauges are 2 inches deep, no mounting room without drilling into the gauge stock cluster.

1. Scared I could break it or ruin it completely from working on the half I need, MPH/RPM

2. I would want to easily return stock maybe down road?

Re: Custom Guage ideas in Trans Am

Try looking for a junkyard, CL cheap gauge cluster.. On the cheap cluster, cut the clear plastic lens right past the tach.. Remove your other gauges or warning lights or what ever from JY cluster.

Grind out some of the holes in your bezel and push your aftermarket gauges through untill the gauge's lip/ring touches.

Re: Custom Guage ideas in Trans Am

Call me crazy, but I want to mount a 7-10" LCD in that area actually.. I was just thinking they make LCD's that are 1/2" - 1" thick that I could easily mount there. A lot easier than a 2.5" inch deep gauge. Plus I wouldn't have to hack up the gauge cluster behind it . I was thinking about doing a carputer in one input and full time back-up cam in the other input on monitor. I have a super small HP slim tower, almost smallest they make.. was thinking of doing rear-seat delete anyway so I can mount it somewhere back there, and mounting the back-up cam most likely into one of the hot's from my system to always run.

I have always been looking for a good place to mount a 2nd screen other than my double din and I think I just found the spot. At least in Camaro's they have a little room between the heater controls and vents.. in Trans am there is no room.

Let me see if I can crudely mock something up.

Very crude, just using MS-Paint. You can get the idea though.

Which leaves me again, where to put the gauges?
