rearview mirror removal w/o windshield damage

I glued that little metal mounting piece onto the windshield backwards anyone know how to get it off the windshield? I though about a heat gun but wasnt sure if it would mess up the windshield, warp that film they have in them.
Any ideas?

and I dont want to just glue another mount onto the old one. Trying to bring it up a notch inside and that wouldnt help any.

I learned the hard way YEARS ago that a heat is bad news! You know Safety Glass has a thin sheet of plastic in the middle to prevent shattering right? Turns out that if you heat the glass up, that layer will suddenly "pop" & you get big air bubbles between the glass sheets. UGH!

Re: rearview mirror removal w/o windshield damage

Here's what my small town automotive glass shop recommended (and the method worked fine for me, though my heart was in my throat the whole time):

Hit the button evenly with a propane bottle torch for a few seconds, then using pliers, gently twist. The operation took several repetitions for the button to twist free. No ill effects.

Just the handheld bottle type, which is easily manageable.

Re: rearview mirror removal w/o windshield damage

Thanks for the advice.

ehow said a blowdryer but I think I will just hit it with a torch for a few seconds, 15 or 20 and take a crescent wrench to it. I am sure my butthole will be puckered the whole time lol I really dont want to buy a new windshield. I will let you know how it turns out.

Re: rearview mirror removal w/o windshield damage

What about the stuff they use to remove "super glue/crazy glue" when folks glue their body parts together by accident?

Is it some kind of solvent like acetone/laquer thinner etc????

Google is your friend:

Re: rearview mirror removal w/o windshield damage

i had to put the mirror back on my 86 last summer, the new adhesive package specifically said that if you mess up and glue the button on backwards, buy another button and glue it to the other. Dont even try to remove it.

A glass shop may be able to held as James suggested, torch sounds a bit iffy, but there are always tricks of the trade.
