Steering column removal
has anyone done a write up on removing a steering column?
If not can someone give me a brief walk through?
And can I use any tilt steering column from any thirdgen? I have an 88 Camaro
and say i find a tilt column out of 84 firebird for example. Can I use that one? Or will it have to be out of the same year.

Re: Steering column removal
The column itself will fit. The only trouble you may have is making sure the ignition switch and key cylinders are interchangable. I think you are ok with yours being an 88. For the 89MY, GM changed wire connections and added the VATS to the ignition. Advantage is you don't have an airbag.
I am doing this from memory from a few years ago, but...
Disconnect the battery.
Loosen the joint in the engine bay--it should have one screw thru the shaft.
Inside the car, remove the lower hush panel under the dash, if equipped, by removing the screws.
Locate the ignition switch- should be toward the firewall on the column.
Remove all the electrical connections.
Follow the column down to the firewall and locate the bolts. Remove the bolts.
Remove the trim panel just under the column-- there will be a few screws holding that on-- 3 IIRC.
Then you will see a bracket and 4 nylon insert locknuts. Remove those and column will drop.
Hope this helps. Like i said, it is from memory from a few years ago.
It isn't difficult to do.
