Can't get B&M shifter handle to face the right way?

I can't get my B&M shifter handle to face the right way.. It used to face diagonally, then I got it to face backwards (180 degree flip, letters upside down, hand molds upside down).

But ever since then, I haven't been able to adjust it at all. Tightening or loosening that washer underneath seems to do nothing at all. I bought a new handle, so I got a bunch of new washers, but nothing seems to help. If I add another one, it still screws on and ends up backwards.

Any suggestions?

Should be a nut on the bottom to tighten

Position the handle where you want it, wind the nut underneath it up until it locks the handle in place. If the nut does nothing, either the nut threads or the threads on the shaft are damaged.
