4th gen dash help
I'm in need of some help. I've searched and found most of what I need for wiring up the gauges. The only thing I need help understanding is the speedometer inputs. I know I need a 91-92 output for the transmission. Now what does the deal for the signal look like that you need from the 4th gen. Every pic that was on any other post is old and gone. Its a dash out of a 93 z28 going in a 89 rs. Any help is greatly appreciated because my brain is fried

Re: 4th gen dash help
Need more info:
Engine/trans?
Originally cable or electric speedo (can't remember the year the Camaro switched and ditched that idiot cable)?
Using factory harness for the car or for the dash (as in, is the harness you're using factory to the 93 or your 89)?

Engine is suposidly a 350 form an 88 pickup. Still has all the 305 tbi stuff on it(work in progress). The tranny is a 700r4 with the cable driven speedo. And as far as the harness list still up in the air. If need be I'll use the 93 but I really don't want to cut everything id rather do what I have to to the 89 harness.

Well, since you're going to need to keep and hide the original speedo to keep the odometer reading, you're going to need a Dakota Digital adapter that goes into the transmission. Unfortunately, they're not cheap. The output wire from the Dakota box goes to the cluster via a green/white wire. I need to grab my spare connector to tell you where (if the boards are the same between the cluster I have out of a different car and the F-body).

Re: 4th gen dash help
ok is there any other way i could get it to work because i can get the transmission sending unit and have the buffer box already. i also have a 91-92 ecm if i need to swap them out to get it to work. i just want to get all the wiring stuff set in stone before i start hacking and f something up. also i ment in the previous post i dont want to hack stuff that i dont necessarly need to, but i will do whats needed to do the swap.
Edit: after doing a lot more research, what ppm output does the tranny sending unit have, and also what about the buffer box. if i read correctly the tranny sends a 8000 ppm, which requires the dakota digital box to convert it to 4000ppm for the speedo, and the buffer box uses 2000 ppm, which is used for the cruse control. please correct me if im wrong. now the next question i have is the little yelow box on the back of the factory gauge cluster, is used for the cruze control conversion correct, how does the cruize control hook up with the new cluster. maybe im answering my own questions but i just want to make sure i understand it all to get it accurate.

Re: 4th gen dash help
1. You MUST keep the original odometer with the car. Which means you MUST use the Dakota parts because you NEED to keep the cable to run the odometer. The cable odometer does NOT interchange with an electric as far as I know (I've asked and haven't gotten a concrete answer).
2. Factory 87-89 VSS puts out 4000 PPM (trans mounted VSS, not cluster mounted). The buffer converts it to 2000 for the cruise module and ECM, and lets the 4000 PPM through for the cluster. Both clusters require 4000 PPM.
3. Yes, the yellow module on the back of the cluster is the VSS and sends the signals to the cruise module and the ECM.
4. I believe that the Dakota VSS sends the 8000 PPM signal... I'd have to look that up.
