Replace airflow control cables

I have an 85 Trans Am and need to replace broken airflow control cables (the cables that control the airflow from vent to heater to defrost. There are two cables. I have them disconnected from the ducts but can't figure out how the cable retainers release from the top of the control unit. The clips are red on one cable and black on the other. They are not pinch type like the retainer clips that hold the cables near where they attach to the dampers. They just have a round hole and I am not sure how they are clipped into the control unit.

Any help on how to release these clips so i do not break anything on the control unit would be of great help.

Re: Replace airflow control cables

I think I remember using a flat head screwdriver on one side as it was a clip that spread out once it was in. I could be wrong as its been awhile since I did them
