Reproducing the dimpled look.

I realize I'm probably the only person in the world that would actually want this look, but does anyone have any idea how to reproduce the dimpled plastic look that is on many interior parts of or cars. What I am trying to do is make some tweeter pods in the little door triangle area. I mounted the tweeter to a 4th gen door triangle at an angle to aim towards the driver more. I did a little fiberglass work to blend it all together. Now I need to cover it or something to make it match the black plastic at the top of the door panel.

They make special paint with a wrinkle finish for trunk areas. Maybe that would work.

You can cover it with ABS as well.

Amazon.com: ABS Sheet - .060" Thick, Black, 12" x 12" Nominal CNC Saw Cut, 8PACK: Home & Kitchen Amazon.com: ABS Sheet - .060" Thick, Black, 12" x 12" Nominal CNC Saw Cut, 8PACK: Home & Kitchen

Re: Reproducing the dimpled look.

You can get close a number of ways, including wrapping with vinyl, using texture paint, using truck bed liner, or using ABS sheets. To get it perfect, you need a spare dash that you can harvest plastic from. You build a mold, heat the plastic, and fit it to the mold. It's the only way you'll get a perfect match. The texture of the factory dash is not exactly the same as commonly available ABS, so using those sheets won't be perfect. Matching the texture of the top of the door panel should be a little easier though, as it's much closer to the standard abs texture than the dash is.

You may also be able to use something pliable to make an impression of the texture, then take that pliable item and work it into the shape you need (good luck doing that without messing up the texture though!), and then pouring resin into that mold to get the part you want.

Re: Reproducing the dimpled look.

I looked for vinyl in two different forms (vinyl decal and the vinyl used in upholstery) and came up with nothing close enough. Saw the abs sheet but figured that would be to thick to try and use without it distorting the texture as it bends to shape. I might try the sem texture paint before I start trying to build molds or vacuum form something. Thanks guys

underbody truck bed coating works great. just spray form a distance and use the mist. here are some pics of my dash kit and dash speaker install i did using this method

Found this after looking at Fozzi58 reply.

Kydex Sheet - .028" Thick, Calcutta Black, 12"x12" Nominal: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific Kydex Sheet - .028" Thick, Calcutta Black, 12"x12" Nominal: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

I know that they make gun holsters out of it so I am gonna try to wrap it around my little speaker pods I'm working on. Wonder how shiny it is?

Re: Reproducing the dimpled look.

Spray on bedliner will give you a decent textured look that will match some of the dash plastics in your car. You won't be able to reproduce the grained texture on some of the plastics.
I used Duplicolor bed liner on a plastic radio and console trim for my TA and then painted it with SEM Landau black and it came out looking like it was factory original.
