I'm going to wager that more than likely it comes out from the bottom. That piece is what releases the shift gate stop.

Yeah, I'm just not very mechanical and dont want to ruin anything without asking the advice of someone who may have done it already.

I know for a fact that it does come off.
If you "KNOW" it will come off than why did you post the question ??

The correct **** for your car is the square version, not the round one (my 86 is a round ****). You can take the whole shifter plate off and look underneath it but I'm not sure if it comes off by itself. Why would you want to take it off anyway?
