Trans AM GTA & Firebird gauge cluster compatibility

I just acquired a 1987 Trans AM GTA gauge cluster (not digital) that has the 140 MPH and the 8K tach. I own a 1991 Firebird that has the same physical shape as the cluster I acquired only mine has the 6K tach and 120 MPH speedo. Will these swap out without changing anything? My car was originally a 5.0 LO3. This came out of a 5.7 TPI. I hope they work. I shift well after my redline 6K tach I have now. Any insight is appreciated.

Both cars used electronic speedometers, so no issues there...might be plug and play. One way to find out!

Re: Trans AM GTA & Firebird gauge cluster compatibility

Are you sure it's a 87 cluster gauge??I have a cluster gauge from a 87 TA and it goes to 120 mph and 6000 rpms.
Never mind,I see the 140 mph gauge was optional in 87
Well anyway, just a heads up,I tested the 87,120 mph and 6000 rpm gauge in my TA witch is a 140 mph-8000 rpm gauge and it worked fine,

Anybody know how accurate the tach / speed came in the better models vs my Firebird model I'm swapping out? How do I go about taking my 120 MPH cluster out? Any tips? I've never had the cluster out in this car before.

It's pretty easy, remove all panels around the cluster,if you have tilt wheel, lower it,loosen the dash pad(front and back)it makes it easier if you remove it all together. You'll see as you go as to what has to be removed. You have to pull on the cluster to unplug it,the whole cluster.after you remove the mounting screws.
