replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

i had a b&m megashifter put in my 88' iroc. the stock shifter plate trim piece is also the ash tray so u cant throw this piece away. i had to cut out the middle of it so i could slip the b&m plate over it. All the screws line up with the old plate but when i go to put the torx screws back in there is one screw that doesnt screw into anything so it just moves freely and when i shift that one corner will pop up. I was wondering if anyone knows if i am missing a piece or is it like this for every car?? if so what can i do to fix it? thank you so much its driving me nuts.

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

ok so here are a few pics. It looks as if nothing is broken off where that screw shud go. It doesnt have a spot for a clip like the other corners. The corner im talking about is the screw hole opposite my hand in the pic. Thanks for your help appreciate it

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

On everyone of these cars one (1) of the little hex screws around the ashtray is actually a fake screw. It's just there for looks and actually has a little tab or something on the back that slips into a hole, if you try to unscrew it you will snap that tab off and have what appears to be a stripped screw/hole.

You'll wanna find a replacement plate and modify it w/out breaking that piece.

EDIT: One of the screws around the Radio is a fake one, not the shifter plate.

You are just missing a clip.

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

am I just missing a clip? i dont know bc there is not really a spot for the clip to be mounted to like the other ones and it doesnt appear to be broken off. there is this plastic piece that is connected to a cable on the floor board , u can see it in of the pictures wondering if it screws in there but doesnt seem right? ill try to post a better pic of it

ok so this that platic piece connected to that cable with a little clip thing at the end where my fingers are if i pull on it it slides back a little like spring action. What is this thing for one? and does that screw really go in here ?

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

No that looks more like a linkage...can't tell you where that hooks up but it clearly should be hooked up to something. You just need a small clip like what is on the other holes. does the ashtray have some kind of threaded hole on it by chance? It's been a while since mine has been apart so I can't remember.

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

ya i have know clue what that's for, there is nothing else in there to clip it to but i don't think the screw belongs there...ya my only problem is there is no where to mount the clip where that screw drops in..it is like there was nothing ever there bc its not broken or anything its nice and smooth...its pissin me off bc it was never like that took it to shop for b&m shifter install and came back like that... but to answer ur question the ashtray and shifter plate is all one piece and the holes are not threaded. the screw doesnt hit the threads until they drop down and screw into console itself and those brackets

IIRC from when I installed the megashifter in my 92 that linkage is the park safety lock thingy (I'm not sure what exactly it's called) that allows you to turn the ignition all the way off only when the shifter is in park. The megashifter doesn't have a provision for it, so it just gets left disconnected.

And I remember I had the same problem with mine, I can't remember if I figured something out or not (haven't driven the car in a few years ), but I should be down at the shop where it's stored tomorrow, so I'll take a look & see.

this pic was taken with my phone where the radio should be facing back towards the shifter, i hope this helps, my shifter itself is from a 91 but it shouldnt matter, my cars an 85 should be the same as yours

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

okay, wait a second, you remember the white plastic thing that was on the bottom of the shifter plate that held the gear number slider thingy? i think the screw just goes into that, basically its just for show, post a picture of the aftermarket shifter so i can see what your tryna work with here.

no its not the white plastic thing bc i just bought a stock shifter plate on ebay cuz mine was broken ...and then i cut out all that **** so it would fit , but i made sure the screw didnt go into that.. it was much lower than the screw hole

Re: replacing automatic shifter plate w/ aftermarket shift kit

The 2 holes you are talking about have dummy screws in them. Just to make it look like the shifter plate is a separate piece. Those screws are not even there on a standard.

I looked today while I was down there & mine is loose there still, so I must've never actually fixed it, although I could swear I had done something to hold it down.
