Instrument control issues help needed
Guys,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I'm getting the 83 Camaro I bought last winter back on the road. I have two problems now.
1. I need a new heater control cable. Where should I go for the part?
2. Half the dash dims and the gauges go crazy when I turn the headlights on. Before you ask I thought it was a ground too. My mechanic (I'm not one) had the dash all apart. He traced every ground and even put a new one on. Nothing helped. He thinks it may a bad printed circuit board. Does that sound right? If so, where can I find one? if not, any suggestions. (Everything works great with the lights on)
Thanks in advance
HM

For the cable and circuit board parts used send Denny a e-mail at
www.thirdgenranch.com
As far as the inst. light issues I would suspect the headlight switch reostat............

There is supposed to be a ground for the headlights up by the battery (Two wires IIRC). That could be why it only happens when you engage the light circuit.
It should be easy to see breaks in the cluster circuit board. It's actually made of flexible plastic with copper lines that sometimes crack. You would look on a diagram showing where the ground is on the connector (square holes in image below) and follow that back either visually or with a multi-meter (set to continuity/beep mode). The ground circuits also tend to be thicker.
It will look something like this: https://www.thirdgen.org/tech/leddas...lustor_big.jpg
A rheostat is a form of variable resistor.
