Steering wheel lock

Hey guys,
I will be completely bypassing the key on my steering column. This isn't a daily driver. I know about all the things I need to do except how to deal with the steering wheel lock. Does the steering wheel only unlock by turning the key? Or does it unlock electrically.?

Re: Steering wheel lock

It is mechanically operated only, so you can just pull the lock bolt out. Leave the lock plate, because this holds together several parts of your column.

Re: Steering wheel lock

Found this column repair article that might help with taking it apart.

Here's a pic of the bolt (or pin) that I'm talking about.

Re: Steering wheel lock

Ok that helps. Anyone know what the reason behind locking the steering wheel is anyway?

Re: Steering wheel lock

My dad always said it was so someone couldn't just roll your car away. That being said the wheel in about every late model car I've owned since my camaro hasn't locked at all lol!

It was done to meet FMVSS requirements for vehicle Anti-Theft measures. The reason many columns no longer lock is due to increased complexity of other anti-theft measures that prevent you from starting the car.

So I guess I should add a disclaimer to my previous post, that if you take it out and your car gets stolen, it's not my fault.
