Speedometer Issue

Hey guys, I bought my car about a month ago and cannot for the life of me figure this out, so I made an account to hopefully get some advice. If anyone has any I would really appreciate it!

My car is a 1982 Camaro Z28 with the T5 transmission. The speedometer is mechanically driven and I have replaced the cable and the drive-gear in the transmission. I can attach a drill to the cable on the transmission's end or even twist it with my fingers to make the speedometer gauge move but once installed it will not move at all from 0mph. No matter what speed it will not budge. The cruise control does not work at all either.

If anyone has an idea of what my issue could be I really appreciate the help!!

OK, I'll try. You have 2 cables, 1 comes from the tranny to cruise unit on fender...and 1 from Cruise Control to speedometer; One is bad or something in the tranny or CC unit gear isn't meshing with each other.

Re: Speedometer Issue

Did you or the PO swap the T5 into the car? Because I thought that 82's got the 4-speed manual and the 5-speeds weren't available until 83?

Re: Speedometer Issue

Well the cable from the tranny to cruise unit is new. So doesn't that mean that the issue would be inside the transmission? If so I suppose I would have to take it somewhere?

Also I did not swap the transmission. I was told it was original but I am not sure. The car is the Indianapolis 500 edition, if that has anything to do with it?

Re: Speedometer Issue

Well then the owner before me must have swapped the tranny when he put in the crate motor. Could that have anything to do with my issue?
