Hvac selector door repair

So as some of you may know I have been working on the interior of my '87 Iroc for some time now trying to get all of the mouse smell removed. In the process of finding out where all of the nests were I ended up removing the dash and hvac box. I'm glad I did because there were four more nests in behind there.

Once I had everything opened up I noticed that the foam on the hvac selector doors was shot. I figured that there was no hope for fixing it since every salvage door I was going to find would probably just be as bad as mine was. However while I was at Home Depot picking up some new furnace filters I came across this foam and figured it would work perfect for fixing the foam on my selector doors.

The process was pretty easy.

First I soaked the doors in some warm water with a little dish soap over night.

The next day scraped off the old foam with a putty knife and sprayed on some flat black Rustoleum paint.

Once that had dried for a few days I cut the foam into close patterns and used some Loctite spray adhesive on the door and foam pieces. When they were setup I trimmed them up with a pair of scissors.

I hope this helps anyone who is looking to freshen up their hvac unit.
