odometer not working/'89 Trans Am GTA

Hi everyone..this is my first post on the forum..hoping I can get some directions on my odometer issue..after all my research I'm getting the impression I'm not going to be able to obtain or even extract the possible degraded gear that drives the odometer..I'm not a versed mechanic but can put things back together if I can take it apart..the speedo works fine so the consensus is it's that little gear that has gone south..

Could anyone that has resolved this issue provide some input that I might can use..I have the cluster out but afraid to unscrew anything on it until I know what to expect..Thanks for any input that anyone may have..

I sent my speedo with this same problem to "scott speedometer". $120 to calibrate and repair it. this is a common thing with our cars.
