So, like 15yrs ago I used a black aerosol fabric dye on my rear cargo shade. It didn't work really for **** and made the canvas so stiff it never liked rolling up properly again.

With all of the different types of aerosol dyes out there, what exactly would be a *proper* type for spray dying this specific cloth material so it does not loose any flexibility? I'm also hoping for something with built-in UV protection so not only does the black last longer but so that deterioration of the canvas does not occur anymore.

Also what do you guys suggest I wash it with to try and remove what I can of the old spray dye and re-soften the canvas prior to applying the new dye?

SEM Aerosol. It's flexible and UV protective. The store I buy from in Massachsetts charges $13.00 a can. I've used about 9 cans on my interior restoration.

As for non carpet material, I tested it out on a t-top bag, that other one that I had that was ripped. It brightened up the straps and the leather, and it didn't stiffen it. However, I never tried on the shade, as I threw those out.

As for what to wash it with to get the stiffness out, you may not be able too. I would look for a 10-15$ shade, and try and paint it with this SEM stuff.. if it doesn't work, you only lost around $15 lol. However, with my experience I think it will work.
