"Seal" a Headliner before recovering?

I'm planning to redo my headliner after reading several success stories and tutorials in the forums but had a question.

I saw an ad on Craigslist for 3rd Gen headliner repair and the guy says he "seals" the headliner. "The roof was never "sealed", the foam is able to absorb the humidity, and the heat from the sun released the cloth from old rotton Foam cushion of the cloth that was glued to foam. I will seal foam to make a barrier from the foam to cloth."

The forums here didn't mention sealing or I missed it. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to go about sealing the headliner before gluing on the material and if it's really needed. Seems like a good idea but maybe it's unneeded work and expense?

Thanks!
