Remote trunk release with slam latch (91 firebird)

My '91 firebird convertible has a non-power slam latch. I'd like to convert it so I can open it from inside the car but not looking to add the power motor if i don't have to. From what I've found on here, looks like early 91s and older had this as an option but the later 91s -92 didn't? Mine's a later 91 but with a slam latch, is there a difference? I've also read the bolt holes (I believe) are different sizes so not sure if going to an earlier style slam latch and release is an option? I'm tired of having to turn off the car and get out to open the trunk during tech inspections on track days...

Re: Remote trunk release with slam latch (91 firebird)

I sent you the answers ans what you'd need to do in reply to your PM. Your best and easiest method is to install the 91.5-92 power pull-down unit including the wiring from a doner 91.5-92 F-body coupe.

Switching to the older style unit with an optional hatch release solenoid would involve a lot more work. The mount pattern for the older pull-down unit is completely different. Not to say that is can't be done. It is just a lot more work to cut out your existing mount and weld or pop-rivet in the older style mount from a 86-early 91 doner car.

Re: Remote trunk release with slam latch (91 firebird)

Hi lonsal (Lon),

Can you please PM me these instructions too? I got the interior trim piece that mounts above the HVAC console pod out of a 91 Formula Coupe, and have installed a factory trunk release switch and a fog lamp switch (to retain my fog lamps of course) into the trim piece. What else do I need to get, and what do I need to do in order to convert my 1992 T/A convertible's trunk to having a remote/power release??

Please let me know. Thanks!
