Two steering wheel styles. Both original?

I've been looking for a replacement leather steering wheel for my 87 Trans-Am. I keep finding two different styles and since my leather is gone I don't know what it is suppose to look like.

Both these pics are from wheels for sale that say they are leather and from early 80's vehicles. Anyone know why they are different?

- Are they both leather or did some cars come with vinyl with fake stitching.
- Did they change the wheel style during a certain model year?
- Is there only one style that's OEM and the other are all recovers?

Don't want to get fooled by an ad that says leather when it's really vinyl or OEM when it's really a recover.

Ad claims this is an 83 Trans Am leather (pace car/Indy wheel?)

Ad claims this is an 85 Trans Am leather. (sport wheel?)

Re: Two steering wheel styles. Both original?

Top one is factory leather wrap wheel.I believe they used this black color from 82-84?
Bottom one is foam filled non leather wrap wheel.
87 trans am should have like a dark grey leather wrap

Re: Two steering wheel styles. Both original?

Thanks. Not sure I would want dark grey when leather shifter boot, dash storage and T-roof storage are all black. Probably look better with the earlier black one from the top pic.

This is what a leather TA wheel for 85- 87 looks like, It's Graphite Gray, it's a lot darker in person,(had the flash on the camera), notice the spokes ,the leather runs farther down on the spokes about an inch away from the center, the foam-filled non leather only travels about a inch down on the spoke.

[QUOTE=mantaguy;6019445]

This is what a leather TA wheel for 85- 87 looks like, It's Graphite Gray, .......

Yours has the wider left and right spoke like mine. The two photos I posted have narrow spokes. Hard to tell if your dash is black or grey? My dash is black so maybe my leather was black too....

Re: Two steering wheel styles. Both original?

The leather was black in all cases in 82-84 Trans Ams. The steering wheel in my 84 is original, and is the first one pictured.

Only S/Es got the color matched leather steering wheel.

Yes, it has this 4 spoke design.

It's not bad to hold on to, leather covered, and in good shape. I'm not in a hurry to replace it, but I really prefer the look of the 3 spoke, and would like to make the change someday.

Re: Two steering wheel styles. Both original?

I have a grey wheel in not to bad shape I think it's foam filled is any one needs it.
Also have two black foam filled ones but the hubs are missing. The grey one has a
hub. I need to go through all my extra parts inventory them and sell them.

Re: Two steering wheel styles. Both original?

My 85 WS6 had the Bottom wheel. My 86 had the top. Its just all about options. realistically you could have ordered the car to have either of the wheels. Personally I like the standard wheel over the leather wrapped wheel. Id just pick the one you like better and get that one, or look at your RPO codes/contact PHS to find out your RPO codes, to know for sure which one your car had from the factory. Both of the wheels I had were the same shade of black (if that helps).

I'll buy yours if/when you make the switch. That's the exact wheel I want. Same as my first firebirds.
