Reddish dust

I have an issue that is puzzling me. I have a dash mat on my dash to protect it from the sun. For a reason unknown to me, there always seems to be a reddish dust underneath it. I have taken the dash mat off and washed it and applied the usual products to the dash to keep it from drying out. I have no idea where that red dust is coming from. How can I stop it? I hardly ever use my window defroster and cannot remember the last time I used the A/C (living in Ventura County has its perks). My only guess is that it is coming from the A/C vents, but from where?

Re: Reddish dust

That one would stump me too.

So if you take the mat off, and shake it out over a clean white sheet, nothing comes out of it?

Re: Reddish dust

The mat is good. I inspected the bottom of it and then washed it in the washing machine. Is there any filters or anything inside the A/C system that may be deteriorating?

No filters. There are foam seal, but I don't know if any are red or not.
