I have an 89 Gta, and was wondering about swapping airbags into it. I have a complete wrecked 92.

Does anyone know anything about these old airbags, were they safe and do the bags still work or is there some kind of expiration on them.

Would it be better or possible to get a system out of a fourth gen?

 

I wouldnt be swapping complete systems from one body style to another. These systems are designed with the sensors and bags placed in a exact, precise location. Any alteration of them could compromise the integrity of them. If your gonna sway bags, Check with the dealer to see if it cross references to the same air bag.

 

Some thoughts:

-Swapping an airbag system into a car is dangerous if it isn't going from two cars that were already set up for airbags.

-An airbag in these cars isn't going to help you a whole lot anyhow. The A pillars are so small that in a substantial front collision you're more likely to slide under whoever you hit and then watch the windshield crumple on top of you (gruesome, but look up some pics, it has happened).

-Proper functioning seatbelts are your best safety feature in a thirdgen, they keep you from moving forward. If yours don't lock in place then I'd be fixing that.

-at the end of the day, it's your car, do what you feel you need to do to feel safe.
