Armrest Surgery (Again)

I learned a great fix here earlier this year so I'm repeating the first one I did due to the high humidity and temps here in Chicago this Summer. Should be good to go for awhile now.

Re: Armrest Surgery (Again)

What did you use on it?

I used Gorilla Glue on some of the soft trim of my radio pod. I was thinking of trying the same thing elsewhere. But I'm always open to new options.

Got the same problem.

Re: Armrest Surgery (Again)

I used JB Weld. Works great! The side I did correctly is doing great, this side I didn't get enough of the material spread evenly, so it didn't hold in those spots.
Once you spread the material evenly underneath the vinyl and on top of the plastic frame, use the boards to apply even pressure along with grips, this makes sure the armrest dries evenly without a "wave" in it. Dries overnight.

Re: Armrest Surgery (Again)

I've had good luck just applying a thin bead of super glue and pressing the vinyl in place until it kicks. Have to be careful with clamps, it's pretty easy to get permanent marks if you use something like clothes pins.

Re: Armrest Surgery (Again)

Great point on the clamps...but that is WHY I used plywood so there is even pressure on the outside vinyl.

Used this technique to save my center console over the summer. Gorilla Glue did wonders.

That's another surface I need to do, thtanner.

With the Gorilla glue, did you wet the surfaces first, or did you aply the glue to dry surfaces?

I used a spray bottle to mist the area with water.

Re: Armrest Surgery (Again)

As long as the foam (or padding) has been removed from both surfaces, Superglue works just as well and sets real fast.

ONLY remove the foam/padding from the area that's getting glue applied,..... remove as little foam/padding as necessary for best results.

Re: Armrest Surgery (Again)

What a coincidence. I just did this. Used two 6 inch hand clamps from harbor freight and 2 1×4 . I used this glue called E6000 craft adhesive . Comes in a grey tube. Put the clamps on for 1 day and its great.

Try www.maptechenterprises.com . They have different options and colors. You pick and choose what you want. Price seems reasonable too.

Liquid Nails from any hardware store.
Does not get much stronger and weather resistant than that.
