Another Cup Holder Thread

So today I go to the junkyard and score a set of the Firebird cup holders only to get home and realize these things are insanely huge, (i don't recall even have drinks this big in the 80s other than the big gulps at 7eleven) plus I now can't see myself drilling holes thru brand new door panels. A regular bottle or can of pop/water would not sit tight in these cup holders. Just a warning to people who may be considering buying a set of these online.

I just now came across this from Classic Industries but 82 bucks for a cup holder is to much to choke on.

http://www.classicindustries.com/pro.../hh1011bk.html

I guess i'll just gonna have to continue using my legs for a cup holder as there really is no other decent option that I have found without hacking up my cars.

BTW The Firebird cup holders will not work with crank windows. My 84 has crank windows and where this mounts the crank would hit it. They'll work in my 87 with power windows.

Ya that's alot of cash for that arm Rest with the cup holder. If I needed a new one I would buy that but I'll use my legs like you said to hold my water bottles.

Re: Another Cup Holder Thread

I'll never understand why they never put cup holders in these cars, hell my 89 Chevy truck has 4 up front and I believe there is 2 in the extended cab.

Seems more reasonable than the console lid price for a firebird.

Do you have to raise up the console lid to use your power windows and hatch release? It looks like it slightly covers your switches.

Re: Another Cup Holder Thread

The Firebird cup holders were fine, right up until the disposable cup people started making the cups so they'd fit standard cup holders. Seems like 15-20 years ago they all went to the stupid top heavy tapered cups that tip over...

Worst part of the Firebird cup holders, is they're fragile, and they're in the way of feet when entering or exiting, so they tend to take abuse until the mounting holes break.

$5 Amazon, lotsa different colors. Heavy ABS, works great, install easy, The color blends a lot better than in the pics. Not sure why they stick out so much in the pics.

Re: Another Cup Holder Thread

but seriously, no drinks or food in the car. daily driver sure, but if were going to take it out for a cruise, I'm in it for the experience of the car, not to stop at the gas station for a drink.

Re: Another Cup Holder Thread

I wonder about simply drilling the factory console lid with a hole saw and then popping a cupholder insert into it. Something like my very rough idea here?

I ended up finding 4 of the original old school cup holders that hung on your door from the 70s and 80s on ebay.

Yeah, I've done that. And it's OK. But apart from looking cheezy, there are 3 main problems I've encountered:
#1: It seems to hang directly where the door lock switch is.
#2: I have tinted windows, and don't like the idea of the tint getting scratched up.
#3: Tint not withstanding, you roll down the window and the cupholder falls out.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of hacking up the center console lid. Mine is heat-warped anyhow, so I don't feel bad about destroying it. The plan was to replace it. So I think I'm going to make myself something that looks like this:

I just pushed the cup holder all the way forward and its out of the way of everything. Cup holders are grey so it blends in with my interior.

Re: Another Cup Holder Thread

^^^ That's a great idea. The only problem is I like to lean on that console lid when driving. But damn that looks great and perfect if you're not a "leaner" when you drive.
