I'm convinced that the gap is from the lower hatch shift on the glass. Please post pics if you end up doing this process. I know a lot of us could learn from it.
I need to paint my glass trim as well. Yours look good. What was your process? Did you remove them from the glass or paint them while still on the glass?

I removed them. The glue was all dried up and they came off pretty easy. It was much easier than masking the whole glass. I just used a semi gloss black.

Did they fit tight when you reinstalled them? Did you use an adhesive?

I could drill new holes for the screws, but that obviously means things wouldn't be back in the factory positions. I see there is a gap between the two ends of the trim piece at the top center of the glass. It seems to me like this must mean the decklid being pushed back by the struts caused the trim to separate and move back as well.

If all this is true, is there a way to push the trim back together so that the holes will line up again, or will I have to drill new holes and leave the gap as it is?
You have to loosen the glass to hinge bolts/nuts (1 side at a time) then gently tap the black trim forward into place. You probably have a gap in the trim at the top center of the glass, that will be closed up and screw holes will line up better when you get it correct.
