Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Looking for a replacement rear view mirror for my 86 Coupe. Just the basic unit. No map light or auto dimming needed.
What are the options? I've checked out Hawks and E Bay.
Maybe used will do if the mirror silvering hasn't eroded as it has on mine. The scrapyards here a empty of any 3rd gens. Not sure what a suitable replacement would be.
Anyone?

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Have you looked at Walmart? Between the RealTree camo seat covers, peel-n-stick fender portholes, and "Cunty Girl" window stickers, they should have a generic universal rear view mirror for about $20. Worst case scenario, you might have to change the button on the windshield to fit the mirror.

Rear view mirrors aren't really application specific beyond the button. My Mustang has a Camaro mirror in it. For what the generics go for new, I don't think I'd fart around with a junkyard.

I'll second the Modern Day Muscle suggestion if you're going used. Personally, I'm a firm believer in keeping what it was born with. Thus, I shop ACDelco at Rockauto.com.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Struck out at the local auto parts store (Canadian Tire). They had a couple but were really cheap in appearance. I'll try a few more places for something new. We don't have a lot of choice. No Auto Zone, Pep Boys. There is NAPA and Car Quest. And Walmart.
Problem with mail order is I generally get crushed by shipping and the exchange rate. A $30 USD part can come out double that.
The junkyard is probably my last option.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

You can install just about any rear view mirror,.. Like Drew said; just a matter of it fitting on the windshield button.

Once I installed an AUTO-Dimming mirror in my Thirdgen,..... I realized that I'll never install a regular mirror again. Put 1 in my 84, 1 in my 95, one in my truck and 1 in my wifes' car. IMO the addition of an Auto-Dimming mirror with on demand - and courtesy light controlled - duel map lights is one of the VERY BEST interior mods you can make to a Thirdgen.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Never thought of something fancy like auto dimming although the map lights would be handy.
By courtesy lamp controlled do you mean you take power from the dome light? Or do you fish down the a-pillar and pick off the circuit in the fuse panel?

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Yup,....

Courtesy lighting is factory controlled at the dome with full time power and a switched ground. To add a duel map light mirror just splice those 2 wires to the replacement mirror and wire the full time ground from the replacement mirror pigtail to the roof. Tapping into the courtesy lighting at the dome is the easiest way to do it.

Duel map light Mirrors are a BIG help in a Thirdgen,... one of the most useful interior mods there is. The roof console Map light was a BIG help in some cars - but they are better when used while driving where the RV mirrors' cockpit courtesy lighting is the biggest "plus". ( any-time "On demand" lighting is a bonus ! )

* 2-wire pigtail = courtesy only
* 3-wire pigtail = courtesy AND on demand

If the mirror also has Auto Dimming; The Auto dimmer gets 1 hot wire, should feed off the same full time ground that was used for the courtesy, and has a 12 volt switched power wire from the Brake Light switch to kill the Auto DIM when brakes are pushed. You could probably also tap into the courtesy lighting for the HOT and Ground, ( and not use the DIM Kill wire ) but these 3-wires should probably be run from under the dash and up the A-Pillar.

This is ( IMO ) the best auto dim mirror. From a 95-96 Impala SS,... but you might get lucky and find one in a similar year Buick Roadmaster too. There are actually few GM mirrors that are Auto Dim with duel map lights,..... some newer Caddys got them, but they are a different style and don't "fit" the Thirdgen interior quite as well as the one pictured below. Original Thirdgen Auto Dimming were prone to fail land had no lights.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Question regarding the mount itself: Is there a plastic piece that fits over the button? It seems that my mirror (as original as I can tell) has a poor fit over the glued on metal slug. I recall in one application that there was a "shoe" that went between the button and the mirror mount.
Seems like a lot of dialogue over something as simple as a rear view mirror but it's something I've been meaning to ask.
FWIW, around here, Amazon.ca has the best deal on a replacement. The local Camaro/Firebird disassembler quoted $90! Used.
In the meantime it all goes into the "master list". The more I drive, the longer the list gets.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Questions and answers,... that's what this site is all about !!!

Pretty sure that it's just a standard windshield button. I've seen some mirrors that use a adapter, shoe or spacer before,...... this fits right over the metal button found in almost all GMs.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

I put this 10 inch Rear View on my car and really like it.

It takes full advantage of the view through the rear hatch glass without looking to oversize.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

I'm somewhat surprised at how limited my options are up here. Nothing of any value in the stores. Anything on E-Bay and I get nailed with the exchange and often ridiculous shipping charges. Takes all of the value any deal I might find.
Looks like I might have found a basic replacement on the Canadian Amazon site. $20 CDN. Order a few more items to toal $35 and it's free shipping (figures I just did a big Amazon order). Not bad. Or get the fancy light....$70.
Good thing this isn't any emergency.
Only now I have to deal with the driver's door that someone drove into...so much for COTM.

Re: Rear View Mirror 86 Camaro

Nice score.
If I had purchased it looks to be 50 bucks (CDN) to my door with shipping, import charges and the exchange. Not as bad I thought but nearly double what the USD list price is.
I had a much better time of this when my racing buddy was working in Chicago. I built large portions of my Camaro when he was there and the dollar was at par.
