Turn signal cam walking out of the switch

So, on my 89 Firebird, I have had problems with the turn signal cam about 4 times now. I've replaced it with aftermarket one 3 times already and they either crack or don't work right. It still has the factory switch (the black plastic part), but the outer plastic (the cam) is what's been replaced 3 times. While I await factory used parts to be shipped to me from another member, I have a question. What holds the turn signal cam to the switch at the stalk arm screw location? Mine, when I flip the turn signal back and forth about 5 times, the whole outer plastic cam walks out behind the lock spring plate causing the turn signal metal arm to get loose and the stalk no longer moves the cam. I can take my finger and press it back and it works at it should a few times and again walks right out toward me. I can see that the outer piece has a "post" that slips into the black piece so it can rotate, but it doesn't hold on to it anyway that I can see. I can pull it apart with my fingers very easily. Is something missing or broke? I've had the whole thing apart tonight and cannot figure that out. Maybe a factory one fits tighter??

I'm not hard on this thing, I mean geez. I've never had this much trouble with a turn signal before, It's not like I'm slamming the thing. I don't get it.

Sounds like a metal arm is missing. There is one held down by a screw. The metal piece connects the stalk (left arrow) to the signal switch. Not my pic.

Re: Turn signal cam walking out of the switch

My metal arm and screw are there. I figured it out this morning since I just received the factory parts in the mail. The factory assembly has a small clip inside the barrel that holds the assembly together at the pivot point. The aftermarket ones I've been buying have no such clip, they just slip together. Nice. Going to trash that whole thing and install this factory assembly in and I think I'll be good to go finally for years to come!
