Timing Cover Walking Around w/ New Roller Cam???
Hi,
Before i open up a brand new engine-
Does anybody know why my timing cover is pulsating while at cranking speed on my small block?
I just converted it to a LPE Roller Cam.
Is the timing cover different for the roller cam motors?
I know the end of the roller cam is longer, and the double roller cam gear that i put on brings the chain back into alignment with the crank gear.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

What block? EXACTLY what parts are these? (cam, timing gear, any spacers or washers or whatever) Tell us EXACTLY what you have.

It's a 2 piece rear main block.
Has a LPE 219 factory roller replacement cam.
Double roller chain set for the factory roller cam setup with the factory thrust plate behind the cam.
The cam has the nose piece for the factory thrust plate, and the timing gear set has the proper offset for the cam, i had to change out the timing gear set from the other non-roller cam.

How far does the dowel pin in the nose of the cam stick through?
Alot of the LPE cams come with the late-mdoel (long) LT1 pin, which IIRC has to be cut off with a die grinder ro something to fit the L98 style setup. You can't even knock it back into the gear far eoungh because it will hit the retainer plate before it's far enough back.

I dont really remember, and dont have any pictures, but i believe the dowel pin was flush at the front of the cam gear.
That will be something to take a look at when i take the timing cover off.
I have the 1 piece oil pan gasket, so i guess i have to loosen up the whole oil pan.

Sofakindom,
You were right on the money, it was the dowel pin that was hitting the stamped steel cover.
Probably if i had had an alum cover it would have been fine.
I ended up snapping the dowel pic trying to get the cam gear off, so that fixed that.
Still has a 1/4 inch left.
Thanks again for the help,
Dave
