Dash swap question 84 into 91
Dash swap question 84 into 91
So I just got a 91 RS and was thinking of installing my 84 dash and steering column into my 91.
My biggest question before I start ripping cars apart is about how VIN is adapted in car.
If I swap out the dashboard is the VIN attached to dash or is it cutout and installed onto car itself.
My 91 has a DMV issued VIN so can't take any chances of having a secondary VIN on the car

Re: Dash swap question 84 into 91
There's no VIN information on a dash housing. The VIN plate is riveted to the body/firewall with special rivets; don't touch the rivets and you will be fine - regardless of the dash housing you use.
FYI: the body-brackets welded to the firewall to retain the 84 dash housing are not the same as the 90-92 brackets. You'll need to be sure to remove the dash housing brackets from the 91 and install the 84 version before the 84 dash housing can be mounted into a 90-92 car. There are other things you'll need to "worry" about too,... Like VATS, wiper wiring, fan wiring and so on ( & on & on ).

I have a whole donor car. Have to apply for a position title still. It was priced way too good to pass up.
It has a 1970 Camaro 350 with a 600cfm eberbrock intake system with rocker covers .
Plus body is almost prestine I only paid 450 for whole car

Here in RI a car with a solid body and clean paperwork is a "steal" at $450,... Without clean paperwork the car is worth the going rate for Light Iron scrap metal. I hope you can get your paperwork cleaned up and the car back on the streets ASAP ! (I'd wait for the clean paperwork before starting the dash swap !

Then there is still the problem of electric gauges vs mechanical ones and getting any of it to work. Where is the advantage to even do this?
One hell of a deal though!

The "cool" factor !!! This was the interior of my 87 Coupe after I converted....... ( I did get a working OP sensor, it just wasn't installed when I took this pic )

** I kept the original VATS Ignition cylinder plugged in with the key left in it and turned to run then tucked it behind the center console. I used the 87 columns ignition 'as usual' and would remove the key from the 90-92 cylinder when I wanted to enable the VATS. Sure, I could have bypassed the VATS entirely, but instead I decided that I wanted to keep the "security" system since it was functional (----> only when I wanted it to be !

Your swap is in the opposite direction from what he wants to do. Won't that make it much harder to do?

I don't know if his conversion will be easier or harder than what I did,........ just posted my pics to show that converting the dash housing is possible.

OK, cool, I was just curious. Amazing what can be done with enough determination and creativity!
Re: Dash swap question 84 into 91
I have an 84 that needs new floor pans and engine is siezed.
So I bought it for minimal of parts and hoping I can get papers prior. Car too nice of shape for just a parts car in my opinion .
Im waiting til I can confirm the legality for title then since I like the dash better on 84 rather then 91 which is why I want to do conversion.

The Steering Wheel is a Firebird Steering Wheel with a Blazer horn cap on it.
Re: Dash swap question 84 into 91
May have to do that swap looks bad ***.
My 84 has the square horn setup which I still like way better then one in my 91. It's the 4th gen setup with a vats key.
Debating weather to bypass vats or keep it as well considering not many people will be willing to steal mine unless they hear what is in her

Can't just swap the cluster,... not directly compatible.
