Help 4th gen dash conversion headlight issue

The 4th gen dash, door panels and center console swap was finished a while ago in my car. The swap was originally started by my buddy and I and then life got in the way, so a local custom shop finished it for me. My car is an 87 Firebird and the donor dash is from a 95 Camaro. When the shop finished the install he did not wire the Camaro headlight switch but rather hacked the panel and put the old Firebird switch in there (looks like crap). I've finally got a bit a time and I started trying to fix some of the shortcuts taken when the shop finished the swap. I've followed the wiring diagram here on the site for the headlight switch and everything works, except the pop up lights go up, but don't come down. I've tried to look for an answer on the site, but haven't found anything (though I'm sure its somewhere). Is the issue that I need a switch out of a 4th gen Firebird/TA as they had pop up lights and the Camaros don't? Is there something special that needs to be done with the wiring?

Hi 87mtl_bird ,

Looking at your 1987 headlight diagram there is a yellow wire that gets power when the lights are switched on , and a white wire that gets power when the lights are switched off . Since the Camaro didn't have pop up lights I would doubt if the Camaro switch has a contact providing that white wire with it's needed +12V power when the lights are off , so I'd bet that's the root cause of your lights going up but not down .

OrangeBird Thanks very much for this... I'm a noob at wiring, but would that mean if in the 4th gen connector I have an empty slot that when i put my test light on is getting power, I could pin the white wire there and in theory the the lights would go down? Given both the camaros and firebirds have similar switches in the 4th gens, I guess that likely means that If i have a firebird or Ta switch with the connector that it would have this contact already?

If the Camaro switch connector has a empty slot , and that slot gives power with the lights off (and no power when the lights are on) , then Hell yeah I'll bet that's exactly what will solve your problem , attach your white wire there and I'll bet they'll close properly
